Waisman was attended at the invitation of student teacher Cindy Dowsling, who, was teaching a unit on racism and its effects. Introduced by Mrs. Ronnie Tessler, director of the Vancouver Holocaust Centre Society, he was the second Survivor to address her classes, the first being Louise Sorenson who spent the War years hiding as a child in Holland.
Waisman began telling his story by observing that until the outbreak of the war, he was a happy and much loved child with everything to

expect from life. He described his warm family and school life to age eight-and-a-half, the moment the War arrived for the Jews of his town. Of the fifteen hundred children in that town only Robbie and one other were alive at the end of the War. It was pointed out that this was the approximate size of the Hamber student body today.
Waisman related his years as a child laborer and concentration camp inmate in graphic yet sensitive detail, and always from the perspective of a child and a Jew. He left the students with several strong messages.
When asked whether he feared there could be another Holocaust, Waisman replied, "This is the reason Fm here today. Racism is a very dangerous thing. It eats into your being. Think for yourselves. Stand up for mankind. If you do this, my pain today will be worth it." - : o - ;
Questioned about revisionists, Waisman said that conclusive proof of the atrocities 2 can be found in the records of the Nuremburg trials. He praised the vision of General Eisenhower who had the discoveries of camp liberators filmed for just that reason. - The former child Survivor from Poland thanked the students for attending this diffi-
SHAMIR
From Page 1
Baker's plan led to the topping of his Likud-Labor unity coalition government March 15 on a Labor non-confidence vote. Israeli Labor party leader Shimon Peres acknowledged the failure of his own effort to form a coalition he relinquished his
mandate to Herzog two weeks ago after 36 days of fruitless efforts.
Shamir is writing off a new unity government. In Jerusalem, he slammed the door on a proposal by Labor's No. 2 official, Yitzchak Rabin, to establish a new six-month Labor-Likud alliance for the sole purpose of enacting electoral reforms, to be followed by new elections.
The former defense minister, who hopes to, replace Peres as Labor Party leader, believes the laws should be amended for the direct elec--tion of the prime minister, freeing him from coalition politics. ;'
Shamir and his Likud bloc intend to form a narrow-based government with the support of a majority of thfe-Knesset's 120 members. That could be accomplished if the ultra-Orthodox Agudat Yis-rael party breaks its once-firm coalition agreement with Labor, giving Likud a total of 66 votes it can count upon.
There were strong signs two weeks ago that Agudah would split with Labor once Peres turned in his mandate, but its adherence to Likud remained problematic.
Without Agudah, Likud claims to have 61 Knesset votes, the minimum it needs to set up a government. The deciding vote belongs to Likud once Labor's failure to form a government became apparent.
Likud is also working hard on a potential Labor defector, Efraim Gur, who immigrated from Soviel Georgia to Ash-dod, an immigrant town^ith strong right-wing leanings. Gu^ has indicated he would
Nicaragua friendly
JERUSALEM — Nicaragua will restore'diplomatic ties with Israel, broken by the former Sandinista government in protest against Israel's • invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the Foreign Ministry reported.
It said an understanding to that effect was given by Nicaragua's newly elected president. Violeta Barrios de Cha-mprro, in a conversation with a senior Israeli diplomat, David Turgeman, who represented Israel at her inauguration in Managua in April.
feel more at home with Likud than Labor, especially since Likud is said to have offered him a ministerial or deputy ministerial office.
The law gives Shamir 21 days to form a government and a 21-day extension if he needs it. The arithmetic at the moment seems to favor his chances.
But it seemed to favor Peres as well when he started out March 20. Peres failed because hewas unable to persuade two ultra-Orthodox parties, Shas and Degel
HaTorah, to support a Labor coalition.
Shamir could also founder on the vagaries of religious politics. His majority would depend on getting all five votes of the National Reli-giouis Party.
But one of its Knesset members, Vigal Bibi, declared last week that the party's consistent position has been to back a broad unity government or to call new elections. Bibi said he would joever support a narrow coalition.
