Always ready for a good game
Nothing separates lifelong chess player Breitman from his chessboard.

Ithough he insists he should be a better chess player he is after so years, Joe Breitman plays, I'm told, a darned good gxmie. Been at it since the '40s when, in Winnipeg, he was introduced to chess at 13. Spent much of his young years hanging around a local Jewish chess dub. Also spent lots of his teenage time as a leader in Young Judca, Habon-im and Hashomer Hatzair. Little wonder, in 1950, Joe takes his new wife and old chessboard to go live in Israel. Stayed seven years. During the '56 war, served as an artillery lieutenant. Returned to Winnipeg in 1957 ... but with wife, chessboard plus children. Gets a master's in social work from the University of Manitoba.
These days, retired and a Vancouver resident since 1986... now with wdfc, chessboard and grandchildren ... Joe spends lotsa time on the Web, where he belongs to three Internet chess clubs. Yet, he finds time to walk an average of 60 kilometres per week... no doubt looking for challenging chess players, eh Joe?
Esther and Abe Nobleman
returned from Edmonton with a pocketful of popped buttons... naches, that is. Not only did they attend tiie bar mitzvaJi of their grandson Ben ("he was just super"), but they were also greeted with the news that granddaughter Robin, a Grade 12 student, was one of two young Albertans to win a $60,000 Toronto Dominion Canada Trust scholarship for community leadership. Life is beautiful, eh Noblemans? Not to mention the grandchildren!
Approximately 9,000 Argentinean Jews have emigrated to Israel in the past three years, "swelling" that community to some 60,000. Primary reason... "to escape their native coxmtry's economic woes." Although aliyah's been "an uphill battle" for many Ai;gentineans, a Knesset investigation estimates a "remarkably low" return rate of six per cent. As for the other 94 per cent... Don't shric (call) for them Argentina!

All this merriment, as you might expect, takes place at Bard on the Beach, whose summer season runs until Sept. 25 under the tents in Vanier Park. Details, 604-739-0559.

Brothers Philip and William Zaro made their mark in Manhattan when they co-founded Zaro's Bread Basket in the 1930s. Today, four shops in New York City's Grand Central Terminal and three in Pennsylvania Station provide muffins and bagels to countless customers among the passersby... an estimated 1.5, million each day. Philip died some weeks ago at 82. William died in 1996. It's now Philip's sons, Stuart and Joseph, who carry on, so to speak, the mark ofZaro.
Read in the newspaper several weeks ago that Jews are "the most likely" minority group in Canada to be victims of hate crimes. There we go folks... once again, the Chosen People!

Been wearing sunglasses to the beach, dear reader... or anywhere in the sun? I hope so. A study at the University of Wisconsin led by ophthalmologist Dr. Ronald Klein found that "excessive exposure to the sim can
cause blindness in later life." "Young people," says the good doctor, "should try to limit sun exposiu-e to protect their eyes." So, whatever your age, hope you're eiy'oying a fim-filled, sim-filled summer... wearing sunglasses. Should mention... I have no investments in sunglasses manufacturing stocks.
The "all-singing, all-dandng" George and Ira Gershwin musical Crazy for You opens the Theatre Under the Stars season July 14. Community members associated with the production... Wendy Stuart (musical director), Adam Gold-enberg (actor), Jeff Feinstein, Andrea and Dewi Minden (orchestra).
Crazy alternates with Footloose, a Broadway musical about teenage rebeUion, opening July 15. Community cast members in that... Lisa Ehrlich, Daniel-la Goodman. TUTS season runs until Aug. 21. Details, 604-687-0174.
A Technion - Israel Institute of Technology computer science professor has developed a new formula that scans and maps the human face as a three-dimensional surface. Reportedly, it "far outperforms" most current systems that rely on two-dimensional images. Even identical twins cannot fool the new face recognition system, "a technology that could revolutionize international seciuity."

In Florence, Italy, in the year 1504, Michelangelo's "David" was placed in the Piazza della Signoria. These days he's at the Galleria dell'Accademia. In celebration of the 500th birthday of this moniunental 14-foot-high marble sculptiu-e, "David" was given what was called "an invisible cleaning" that took eight months. Very visible, however, was the $500,000 cost. But amortized over 500 years, eh... not so expensive for such a gorgeous Jewish guy. □
