ISRAEL SERIES
PUBLISHER Yehuda Levy In his Jerusalem Post office.
From Page 5
another idea in prospect.
The Post launched a French international edition last November that is now selling 4,000 copies a week in France and another 2,500 in Israel itself. The plan is to print it inrFrance when its circulation there reaches: 6,000 or T,000, according to Levy; Marketing is also starting in Quebec. Projections are for some 10,000 overall circulation of the French edition by the end of 1992. And Spanish will probably be the next step,. The Bulletin XtSLtntd.
"I believe the Jerusalem Post has not yet exploited its full potential in English, even not in Israel,** said Levy. **rm sure that we can reach a cer-: tain number of Israelis not bom in the United States or England but who can read English adequately enough to buy the paper, say twice a week, especially in the business sector — there are several thousand Israeli businessmen in tourism and banking. Therefore Tm going to strengthen the business, section by bringing in a talented, busi-^ ness and economic editor with good experience.**
A new managing editor has been hired to enhance the editorial department— Eric Fet-tman. 38, of the New York Post^ who is making aliyah.
*'He isn*t political in the Israeli sense of the word,** Levy points out. **although he*s very familiar with everything.-- he speaks and reads Hebrew. He*s a good journalist and Tm sure will do a competent job.**
Asked if he saw himself as not just a publisher of a^per but ratherasa person who can help with some of the difficulties Israel faces. Levy admits, *^his is a very important question for me.**
H9 explains,. do see myself as different from other publishers of other newspap* ers, Becau&e of the fact The Jerusalem Post is the only English-language newspaper coming otit|bf Israel, it places on us very mcial responsibil-
ities, unlike aU other newspapers in Israel. The Hebrew dailies don*t worry about how others win look a^^^ thrb^gh liteir pages.**
Hes(b(9sthe\^ much wider impact^ "Yet at thel same time^ w^^ not t(^ become a mouthpiece fbrtifeestdblishitteiit!.^ec^
while I care how Israel is per^-ceived through the pape?^ jiye have to lie iiiiaetiduioti^^^^ report the facts and certainly not to automaitically make Israel; look beaiitiful jUst because we want to save face in ceintain aspebts or i^sue^
He remains mticai of the former Post admiiiistiratipn, because they daihagedl^el, bashed it almost as an auto-maticr thing, whether it was justified or not. **f he damage was enormous.^
Levy notes, **We still have downstairs those who are being called leftists — and we have those who are called rightists. We have everybody. But they know now that what was possible here two or three years ago is not possible any more. Namely, that when you report news you have to report news — and not mix news with opnion. When we do opinion pieces or analyses, I want all sides of the Israeli political spectrum aired through our opinion pages. Tm putting the emphasis on straight, clean reporting, and giving as much as possible a broad range of analysis and opinions.**
So this new career as publisher and president of the Jerusalem Post in ^oihe ways, not such aiong way for Yehuda Levy from the days when he was an IDF career officer who was part of the Israeli military team th^t assisted, built and traiiied the Ugandan Special Force (1968 for three years) or when he was IDF Spokesman in Beirut in 1982, during .Operation; Peace for the Galilee in Lebanon.
He is still managing pepple, operations, fighting wars and speaking out for Israel and Jews.
