Community will hear briefIng on Israel
By MICKEY SOUDACK
Arriving from meetings with Prime Minister Shamir; President Bush and Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Netanyahu, Zvi Harry Hur-witz is -Ben Gurion Universi-ty*s guest speaker Sunday, Nov. 24,8 p.m; at Beth Israel Synagogue. He will brief the community with an update^
Shamir*s advisor on World Jewry has a long-standing history as a dynamic speaker, decisive and sometimes controversial outspoken promoter of Likud policies.
His pre-Aliyah leadership activity in the South African Betar movement and Zionist Revisionist organization led to a 40-year association with Menachem Begin for whom he served as external information advisor. In fact, in 1978 Hurwitz published the first biography on Begin.
In his role as information minister at the Israel Em(>assy in Washington in the iearly 1980s Hurwitz complained about the lack of positive information concerning the politicaland historic necessity of establishing settlements in the Territories, expressing, according to the New York Jewish Press, the feeling that the **.. . *other side' was always getting the attention, while the real facts were gbing unreported*^
In 1981 he stated,**the only newspaper that today supports the Israeli government is Hatzofe and thus it is no wonder that the American Press carries so many anti-Israeli stories originating from Israel.**
In January that same year, in a presentation on Jsraeli hasbara' (political information) to Herut party leadership meeting in New York, he stated that "while the. Begin eovernment policy is to maintain responsibility for
RABBI PEARLSON ... Ethiopian absorption
security in Judea, Samaria and Gaza District, and Jerusalem as a totality, **the Labor concept calls for a 'Jordanian option* or a simple abdication from these areas.**
He added: *^We must take them (Labor*s declarations) at their face value. The months ahe^d may be the most challenging in all our lives of service to this great nation.**
Asked whether, by expressing such partisan views, he was not going beyond his job as an Israeli diplomat and civil servant, Hurwitz replied: "1 am expressing the views of the government, and that's all.**
Such open expression of his partisan views while in a diplomatic and civil servant position caused Leon Hadar, then Jerusalem Post New York correspondent.to write,
