A megillah including Emily Carr
Author and institute president Ron Burnett has written How Images Think.
ALEX KUNER SOCIAL COLUMNIST
In Purim vernacular, you could say the story of Emily Carr Institute president Ron Burnett's university education is a McGill megillah: a BA in film and communication ('68), a piaster in film (71), a PhD in communications ('81) ... all from McGill University. Megillah postscript ... served from '87 to '96 (the year he became Emily Carr president) as McGUl's director of graduate programming in communications.
Ron was bom in London, England, in 1947. His mom had escaped from Vienna in 1938, his grandmother in 1939. The rest of their family perished in the Holocaust.
But back to the megillah. Ron's MA thesis was actually a film... one of the first ever made for a master's degree. Another first... Ron fotmded one of the first Canadian journals on film and communications, Cine-Tracts, whose 17 highly regarded issues have been revived on the Internet.
In addition to some 150 articles in learned journals, Ron's published three books. The third, How Images Think, published in April by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, opens, "quite personally," with a chapter on the Holocaust.

Israel has signed an agreement enabling it to participate in the European Union's Galileo program, the European Global Navigation Satellite System. Israel, one of only eight coimtries in tiic world that has developed space capabilities, will be the second non-EU country, after China, to join the Galileo program as a member of the project's governing body.
And speaking of the EU ... with its recent expansion, European Jewry "could unite to de-

More than 1,000 representatives fipom 42 countries met in Budapest for the event. Forum emphasis ... yas legacy of2,000 years of Jewish life in Europe and its potential renaissance." Forum aims... "to develop a wider Jewish consciousness by strengthening cultural and social welfare links across the continent"

At a 60th anniversary celebration of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, the Montreal division bestowed upon native son William Shatner its Award of Excellence. What I'm trying to figure out ... was this in recognition of William's acting abiUties or just that he's such a nice Montreal boitchik. I'd say the latter.

Jerusalem saw its third annual gay parade this svunmer. Some 3,000 took part. Arrested ... two right-wing activists who threw eggs at participants. Naturally arrested! It's criminal to "serve" eggs without toast and hash browns.
Although he says he's "not a member of the Jewish religion," he vras "partly brou^t up" by his Greek-Jewish maternal grandfather after his non-Jewish father left the family home. I'm
talking about a fella who these days is "the most popular member of the French cabinet," Nicolas Sarkozy... and possibly France's next president in 2007.
Forty-three per cent of U.S. Jewish youth attend summer camp. An important part of "growing up Jewish," says Deborah Newbrun, director of Camp Tawonga, a 73-year-old camp affiliated with the San Francisco Jewish Community Centre. True Deborah! But Tawonga... is that a Hebrew or Yiddish word?
A new exhibit on Nazi demography at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., features films, photos and artifacts firom 40 different collections and highlights the roles played by doctors and scientists in the practice of Nazi eugenics.

Arab Israelis, like a number of their Jewish coimterparts, reportedly welcome Israel's security barrier. They want relief fi-om the suicide bombings and gun attacks that have kill^ close to 1,000 Israeli citizens during the nearly four-year conflict In one attadk, five of the 21 people killed by a suicide bomber at an Arab- and Jewish-owned restaurant in Haifa were Arab Israelis.
Ah yes, the security barrier. Seems, according to a "damning report" by Palestinian l^islators, that Palestinian businessmen have "made millions" supplying cement for its construction... and with the "full knowledge" ofYass-er Arafat. The cement, from Egyptian companies, was "originally supplied at a huge dis-coimt" and earmarked to help rebuild Palestinian structures bulldozed by Israel. Residents of 20 Palestinian villages are filing suit against officials in the Palestinian Authority.
