OKANAGAN GATHERING
FrOm Page? 1
Salmon Arm RCMP said the driver of the vehicle was Colin Pressler, son of Eileen Pressler, who edits the Couhcirs monthly newsletter and is organizing its "Leadership Conference!"
The car was occupied by two sunglassed figures, one of whom operated a vidieo camcorder and monitored proteisters. The crowd surrounded the car and began striking the windows and hood as it twice pushed its way through, according to news reports.
Nicole Brighouse, 13, told the Vernon Daily News she was hit in the legs by the car. "Some of us were trying to get out of the way when all of a sudden, he just started ramming us," she said.
Leonard Saunders, the newsletter's 85-year-old a ss is tan t ed it or, late r slapped 15-year-old Kaila Comeau across the face, "also apparently hitting 16-year-old Marlene Streight with the same blow," according to the Daily News. "We were walking in front of him, linking arms. And he stuck his hand out and went whap," Comeau told the paper.
Saunders claimed he hit Comeau in self-defence. "She was coming at me," he said, adding that another student tried to kick him in the groin.
Salmon Arm RCMP are reportedly considering assault charges arising from the protest. The driver of the vehicle is also said to be seeking charges against protest organizers for vandalism of his car;
"Most complainants have told us that they do not wish . to proceed, but there are still a couple of matters under investigation," Corp. P. Nylen told The Bulletin.
"I don't think wC reaIly acted violently," Jerry Job, a teenage protester who claims to have lost several relatives when the Nazis occupied

atthe JCC Cleared 9 a.m. Wednesdays
Poland, told media. "The only ones acting violently here were the CLR. They were trying to rile us lip and provoke us into something."
The local community showed spontaneous revulsion at the sponsors of the meeting. Job added. - They try to coyer it up with cahdy-coated names like Canadian League of Rights andCoun-cilon Public Affairs, and it's wrong."
David Lethbridge, a psychology instructor at the Salmon Arni campus of Okanagan Community College, said his role as the demonstration's organizer came about "kind of accidentally."
LEVIN
When it looked as if the Council on Public Affairs would hold its conference in Vernon, Lethbridge told The Bulletin, ht was contacted by a resident in the Okanagan city \yho thought he'd be interested in helping to stop it
■■■ "1 got some documents on the Canadian League of Rights and started talking to newspapers," he recalled. "Before long, people iri town started to phone me."
Lethbridge denounced the CLR for distributing such Holocaust-denying materials as Did Six Million Really Die? v
PromotionaL literature said Gostick wason a tour of B. C. a rid Alberta, eritit led
"Moment of Opportunity."
He estimated that about half of the Salmon Arm protesters were college and high-school students. He told The Bi4lletinYiebe]iGyes so many students showed up because "many of the young people in town are quite bright, quite intelligent and understood the issues."
There would have been mOrethan five|Supporters of the CLR arid'the Councilat the community centre, but "we understand that they came by arid saw the size of the demonstration, and were afraid to carry on," he said. . The incident prompted the Sandman Inn in nearby Kelowna to cancel a May 1 meeting, also sponsored by the CLR and featuring Gostick and Boswell. Hotel manager Gerhardt Felgan-hauer halted the gathering only five hours in advance after learning of the CLR's corinectioris with the Council on Public Affairs and its promotion of Holocaust deniaL
"When 1 came across the nanne of the organization, Felganhauer told the Bulletin, "I interpreted that as meaning the opposite. I thought it was some left-oriented group of people!"
The hotel manager said he has been receiving only positive feedback since the canr. cellation.
Felganhauer, who immigrated to Canada in 1965, said he had joined the Hitler Youth movement in his
native Germany at age nine. "Obviously, as history knows, theyouthwere brainwashed. I'm lucky that I'm now a Canadian citizen and enjoy the freedoms I have."
The CLR was also sche-. duled to meet last week at the Procult Institute in Van-, cbuver's Gastown. The irtsti-tute is run by amateur nunierologist Jud Cyllorn, the; author of Stop Apoldg' izingy which has been described as a 500-page attack on Jews, Catholics and nonr whites. ,:
Meanwhile, Okanagan Jewish Community president Bob Levin told The Bulletin that his organization had enlisted the aid of other community groups to help stop the Council's "Leadership Conference" frorii proceeding in Vernon.
"We involved other interest groups, such as unions and politicians, who would back us up," he said. The OJC sent letters to religious groups, Royal Canadian Legion branches and "any group that would be respon-" sive," containing "all the facts" about the Council and its conference.
"I was very thrilled with, the response in my community," said Levin, a Kelowna resident. To counter the Councirs claims that it is a Christian group^, Levin told churches that the organization is hiding behind the guise of Christianity: "I got letters; from ministers saying, ^ou're right!'"

wondei_why I'm telling you all this, and at our very first meeting: Know that in every person's lifetime he hears the echo of Moses'call: "Let those who are with G-d, stand with me.'.'It takes immediate response and decisive action. Make sure that whenyou receive the call, even though you may not feel ready or adequate, do not repeat the mistake of your great-grandfather. Make sure that you respond positively."
Those who respond to the Divine call are worthy of calling upon the Divine for His blessing. Herein lies the source of the priestly privilege, the secret of the encompassing prayer-shawl. The priestly tradition is a noble one, but the Divine challenge repeats itself anew in every generation. When it, comes to us, niay we not be found wanting.
