Voluritarism is a growing commodity among young adults in the Vancouver Jewish community.?
This was evident during the first ever Yduth Achievement Awards ceremony this summer which saw 39 people honored by the community in recognition for outstanding leadership and service.
Sponsored by Vancouver B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation and the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, the YAA attracted a crowd of 140 who sat thorugh a sweltering summer night to cheer on the young achievers.
Of th& 39 honorees; Neal Chark and Trilby Smith had been chosen by a selection comrnittee as the two overall winners.
Deborah Freed man, YAA co-ordinatbr and Zac Kaye, Hillel House executive director, presented plaques to Ghark and Smith. Addi-; tionally, a plaque will be installed at the JCC inscribed with their names and the two were awarded a three-month JCC membership.
' The other nominees were presented with certificates, while their names and community involvement were .recorded in a skills bank book to be distributed to major organizations.
The . evening's ceremony was also an opportunity to
honor outgoing Israel Aliyah Centre shlichirnRony and Miri Levin for their work with local youth. An address of appreciation to them was made by George Mate and
"Rbny and Miri stand for tremendous personal example in terms of leadership," said Kaye. "This community has been really blessed and fortunate to have the Levins.. They sought to serve and they were always there."
Thanking the community for the honor, the Levins emphasized that they would be taking many memories back to Israel.
"There is no leadership without a community; there is no shlichut without a group," said Rony. "It's not what we gave but what we're taking home ~ the special memories, a lot of friend-ahd partners in the"
