In its 102 years, B^.
Sugar hasn't changed"'its
name or headquarters (18
acres on the Vancouver
waterfront).
But itspackaged products
sold under the Rogers naniie will soon experience a big change: the addition of a BCK symbol, indicating kashrut certification by the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of B.C. "The symbols will be
added in the next couple of months, when the existing stock of packaging is used up," Jim McArthur, B.C. Sugar's chief analyst, told The Bulletin in ah interview.
"But we are producing kosher products now. Yo-- seph Thomson [Orthodox Rabbinical Council administrator] has visited bur three plants in Western Canada."
Last month, Thomson certified as kosher all major products from B.C. Sugar as well as its Alberta Sugar (Taber) and Manitoba Sugar (Winnipeg) divisions.
These include refined white sugars; cube and icing sugar; Golden Yellow, Best Brown, Demerara, and Plantation raw sugars; Rogers Golden and Pancake Syrups, liquid inyert syrup, liquid isucrose, niolassesand

refiners' syrup. AU sugars, except foricing sugar (which has three percent starch added to prevent caking), may be used for Passover if purchased beore Yom Tov.
The Vancouver cane sugar refinery produces all - of the specialty^ products, while the two beet sugar factories supply the Prairies with granulated and industrial liquid sugars, McArthur explained. About the only byproduct not given kashrut certification, he noted, as beet pulp, which B.C. Sugar sells to Japan for cattle feed.
Although its products are just now under rabbinical supervision, "we've had a very good tacit relationship with the rabbis here; for the past 25 years," said McArthur.
*in Manitoba, for example, about 27,000 acres are used to grow sugar beets, so the thought of inspecting all three such large plants had almost been intimidating! But a year and a half ago, it became the right time --both for the rabbinical council and in our minds.'' ' Despite its large facilities, B.C. Sugar has had little dif^ ficulfy^-iii -adapting to the requirements of kashrut. "We're a one-product company — sugar — so it's only a matter of being fine-tuned," the chief analyst said "We just had to make sure that our processing materials were approved."
While its granulated sugars are sold mainly in B.C., the food giant (which processes 100,000 tonnes of raw Australian sugar in Vancouver alone) distributes syrups and solid sugars across Canada, and some syrups are sold in the United States.
"The firm's contract \yith the Orthodox Rabbinical Council is written so that kashrut supervisors can visit the Vancouver refinery at any time, Mc_Arthur said. The ORC will arrange for similar supervision of the Prairie factories, he added.
Family members with the company today include Peter Cherniavsky, its board chairman, and Brian Rogers, its sales manager,
D. Mi S. Elliott is the firm's chief operating officer and executive .vice-president. Dennis N. Hurl is vice-president, sales and mar-
"BCK values the relationship established^ with B~C. Sugar, one of the province's most prestigious companies," Thomson, BCK kashrut administrator, told The Bulletin.
He said, "We feel confident that their having obtained kosher certification will only enhance their outstanding products and look forward to being able to work with them throughout a long future."
