Volunteers for Israel must be doing something right because so far, between Nov. '92 to Dct, '93, an impressive 31 B^C. residents have gone to Israelas volunteers on the program - the youngest was 18, the oldest 79 ... This is almost triple the number of people (12) who went on the previous Nov. '91-Oct. '92 , , Of course, VFI B.C. chairman Morris Sbroiiow is ecstatic with the numbers . .. Freedom of the City
Dr. Polly Weinstein, former chair of the Vancouver School Board, was given the Freedom of the Gity during a special meeting of Vancouver city council Nov. 9.
Freedom of the City is the highest award the city council can bestow on an individual.
Dr. Weinstein was a member of the Vancouver School Board from 1989-90 and its chair during 19.81-82 and 1984-86.
The honoree's career in education began at Killar-ney Secondary School where she taught after Gompleting teacher training. Following doctoral studies, she taught mathematics in the education faculty at UBC from 1976-86.
During her time on the school board, Dr. Weinstein was concerned with issues of racism, the accurate reflec-

tion of the community in curricula and encouragement of female science students.
The Freedom Scroll presented to the educator reads in part: "A lifelong passion for educational equality has inspired the career of Polly Weinstein . . . Her activism on behalf of children has always sought to define and refine the link between education and social justice"
