GOING OVER PLANS for upcoming NCJW Israeli Brunch are some members of fheev^nt organizing committee.
In the past year, only one loan made ;by the Hebrew Assistance Association had to be written off, it was noted at the organizatii)n's 13th annual AGM; ■
Shirley Barnett, HAA secretary, declared that "most banks would be proud to have bur record." By lending money to people instead of offering a handout, she remarked, individuals develop a sense of commitment.
The Nov. 10 AGM, held at the JCC- included presentation of financial reports, and election of officers and trustees for the coming year.
The "free loan" society received over 600 applicar tions for financial assistance in the past year, foramounts rangihgfrom $500 to $3,500.
The HAA currently has total assets of $263,000 and loans outstanding of $201,198. Repayments return about $6,000 per month.
With a 35 percent increase in loans granted over the past three years, HAA operates cautiously, said Barnett, in order to make loans stretch as far as possible.
This year the association had its third capital campaign, raising $76,524.

finally is able to declare the verse he has been waiting to utter his entire life. *'A nd Jacob called the name of the place Peniel "because I have seen G-d face to face, and my life is preserved" [Gen. 32:32]
Until now Jacob has heard G-d speak or seen Him in dreams, but never before has he beeii privileged to experience the intimacy created by seeing with his own eyes.

the reward is seeing G-d face to face, proving that all along Esau, or the spiritual struggle he symbolized, was what stood in his way, •■'/■: '2 '■■ '
. If what we've been describingis correct, we should how be presented with the G-d of Jacob, iti addition to the G-d of Abraham and the G-d of Isaac; And this is precisely what we find after the face to face meeting with Esau proves conciliatory and the essence of graciousness.
The text describes that Jacob " . . . carrie in peace [sha-lem] to the city ofShehem. . .''[Gen. 33:18].
The versei can also read, "whole"and although Jacob now : is lame because his sciatic nerve has been touched, neverthe-less he is finally "whole" spiritually,
Having exorcised the demons of Esau, Jacob becomes complete, able to build an altar to his G-d, calling it, ''Kel Eldkai Yisrael.": G-d, the G-d of Israel, [Gen. 33:20]
Finally G-d is not just the G-d of his grandfather and his father, but He is also the G-d of Israel — of Jacob: The circle is complete, the search for his own G-d is over.
Thus empowered, Jacob is ready to face the third stage of his life, the transformation of twelve sons into the twelve tribes of Israel; Ahji now we can pray in the A midah to the personal G-d of Abraham, G-d of Isaac and G-d of Jacob!:
