Gaza Port
•---e»- -
Bonz Eppelbaum, a former Haifa University historian with experience in both politics and business, began working on a major economic development project involving Palestinians, Israelis and Europeans.
The group plans to build a floating port for Gaza.
The impetus for the project began when two entrepreneurs Rinaldo Pietti, head of the Italian Marine Floating Port's Installation Group, and Gilbert Ver-steeg, of the Dutch Aarding Concern, approached Eppelbaum.
They explained that they wanted to bring to Gaza an internationally-patented way of building floating ports that they had developed.
The Europeans have previously built floating ports all over the world in China, Indonesia and the Philli-pines.
Israeli-Jordanian Oil Exploration
Israel and Jordan will begin joint seismic exploration of the oil potential near the Dead Sea.
The explorations will be carried out under auspices of the American National Geological Institute. Israeli,
NEW^^YORK (JTA) Robert Lifton received the American Jewish Congress' Stephen S. Wise Award to mark the end of his six years as president of the national organization.
American and Jordanian geologists and oil experts will meet in Washington this year to discuss the matter.
The Israeli National Oil Company plans to raise $20 million on the Tel Aviv Stock exchange in order to fund the exploration.
Feasibility Study For Canal
The World Bank, with U.S. and German backing, will fund research into the feasibility of building a canal to connect the Red Sea and the Dead Sea.
Israel and Jordan are discussing the possibility of building such a canal.
The project would include bringing water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea at a cost of $25 million.
The bank hopes to present its findings at the next meeting of Middle East multinational water talks, scheduled to take place at the beginning of April.
Water transported by the canal would undergo desalination at a plant to be built near the Dead Sea. Because the Red Sea is topographically higher than the Dead Sea, the water flowing from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea will generate enough electricity to power the plant.
There is also a proposal to build a large port between Aqaba and Eilat.
Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Shijnon Peres believes that such an economic development needs to proceed along four lines: investments in infrastructure; a joint solution to the water problem; development of the tourist industry; the termination of the arms race.

The Vancouver Jewish Hockey League (VJHL) began 1994 in the same way it left '93 — with the top three teams all winning.
On Sunday, Jan. 2, the Panthers continued their amazing unbeaten streak, extending their string to 14 games with a 5-1 victory over the Lightning.
Jeff Korsunsky, goal-tender for the Lightning, forced himself out of his sick bed and put on a great performance keeping the score
allowing just one goal.
The night's second game had the Gators trouncing the Sharks 10-4, with the Sharks struggling with a depleted line up, having to double-shift two men all night.
The final action of the night had the Angels hanging on to win 6-5 over the Rockets.
The Angels jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead with Neil Pollock leading the way with two goals.

Barry Garfield opened the scoring for the Panthers with a drive from the point.
Brian Parker also had a strong game scoring a great goal, roofing the puck with a quick snapshot.
Norm Mammon continued his strong play in net
settled down and tightened up defensively, outplaying the Angels the rest of the way.
Gord Lotzkar had a hat trick for the Rockets, and Joel Finkelstein just missed tying the game on a great feed in the dying moments.

The VJHL is now in its sixth season of operation. It was started by Barry Garfield, Steven Garfield and Mardy Grossman as an opportunity for Jewish adults to play hockey in a fun, relaxed, non-contact environment.
The league is structured in a three-line system, with line one being each teams top five players, line two the next five, and line three being the rookies — players with limited experience.
Each line plays against the other teams' counterparts, with the home team having the line shifting decision.
This system allows for players of all ages and ability to enjoy themselves.
The league has grown from its original three teams to its current six teams, with more players wanting in. But, due to a lack of ice time, no further expansion is possible at the moment.
The league currently has three ice times: UBC at 9:45 p.m., Riley Park at 10:15 p.m., and Kerrisdale at 10:45 p.m. All games are on Sundays.
The season goes for 25 weeks after which playoffs begin. In the league's first season, there was no playoff champion as the zamboni came out to clean the ice with the two teams tied.
The past two seasons has seen the Angels repeating as playoff champions. Come out and cheer for your favorite team as we wait to see who will win this year.
Remember volleyball night followed by pizza starts on Sunday Jan. 16 at 7:30-9 p.m. at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. Please pre-register by calling the JCC at 257-5111.

a few more days before loudly attacking Assad.
They are mindful of the forthcoming Clinton-Assad meeting, scheduled to take place Jan. 16 in Geneva.
The administration has indicated that the summit, which is seen as a major policy boon for Syria, is not conditioned on the fulfillment of Assad's promise.
Reports on the number of travel documents that have
been issued vary: tl.S. congressional sources indicated that between 100 to 200 travel permits were issued in one week in late December, while news reports in Israel said up to 850 Syrian Jews were expected to get the precious travel permits in a one-week period.
Other reports, quoting an anonymous Jewish merchant in Damascus, put the number at 300 to 400 exit visas granted in a 10-day span.
Feld Carr, who has been
an advocate for Syrian Jewry for 23 years, said, "I am really praying that they are all going to come out," but that Syrian officials seem to be creating "problems" for some Jewish families before they are allowed to leave.
She said it was too early to speculate as to the number of Jews who have been allowed to leave.
Feld Carr said the Canadian government has been at the forefront of efforts to push the Syrians to free the country's Jews.
Pointing to a letter she received from Foreign Affairs Minister Andre Ouellet, Feld Carr said Canada's supportive policy appears to
be continuing with the new Liberal government.
Feld Carr told The Bulletin that only two people have come to Brooklyn and another two to another country, so far.
