TEL AVIV
The na-
tional executive of Canadian Jewish Congress, meeting in Israel, has lauded the recently-signed agreement in which the Vatican and Israel committed themselves to forge full diplomatic ties and to combat anti-Semitism.
"It is particularly exciting to learn about this news while we are in Israel," said CJC national Israel affairs committee chair Moshe Ronen.
"We trust that the Vatican will join the efforts of the Jewish community in its continuing struggle against those who wish to rewrite history by denying the Holocaust," he continued.
CJC executive vice-president Alan Rose added from Montreal, "The establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and the Holy See represents an historic accord between the Jewish people and the Catholic world. New vistas of partnership between Jerusalem and Rome augurs well for the Middle East and mankind."
The meetings marked only the second time in the organization's 75 year history that CJC has met in Israel. Sessions took place Dec. 28-31 at Tel Aviv's Carlton Hotel, moving to the Laromme Hotel in Jerusalem Dec. 31-Jan. 4.
Dr. Michael Elterman, co-chair of the Joint Community Relations Committee of CJC (Pacific Region), and honorary vice-president of the national organization, was the lone B.C. attendee.
The meetings began with
discussions of Israeli security. At the opening session, a resolution was passed which reaffirmed the organization's support for Israel's peace efforts.
Canadian Ambassador to Israel Norman Spector and Neville Lamdam, director of the North American division of the Israel Foreign Ministry, briefed the group.
Brigadier General Freddy Zach, Israel Defence Force deputy coordinator for the peace negotiations, emphasized that a number of points still had to be resolved before Israel would begin to withdraw from Gaza and Jericho.
They included control over border points, the precise size of the Jericho region, settler security, water and the issuance of passports and license plates.
In additional news from the Tel Aviv meetings, officials from Israel's Magen David Adom credited CJC for its active lobbying of the Canadian Red Cross Society on its behalf.
MDA director of international affairs, Dan Arnon, and Tel Aviv University president Yoram Dinstein, a consultant to MDA, publicly thanked CJC for giving high priority to the issue of non-acceptance of the MDA's red shield of David emblem by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
In addition to formal meetings, participants also received a tour and briefing of a tank base, visited Haifa University and inspected the Nes Ziona United Israel Appeal project.
More than $31,000 was grossed at a goods and services auction co-hosted by Eitz Chaim synagogue and B.C. Children's Hospital.
Held Dec. 15 at the Four Seasons Hotel, the event attracted close to 120 people.
Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds will be retained by Eitz Chaim, with the balance going to the hospital.
Items ranging from restaurant gift certificates to designer eyewear and even an 18 carat gold watch valued at more than $28,000 were auctioned by May-nard's Auctions president Barry Scott.
Every item was scooped up by eager bidders, according to Marilyn Hooper, who
co-chaired the event with Bob Finklestein. Lou Hollander assisted the co-chairs.
"Many items went for close to their actual value, while others were exceptionally good buys," Hooper said.
Danny Shmilovitch was the master of ceremonies. Eitz Chaim members Cecelia Bonatto, Michael Mil-Iman and Juli Smollan modelled clothes that were auctioned.
A dessert and fruit bar "proved extremely popular," according to Hooper.
