RICHARD AND ARTHUR WOLAK
JWB Staff
A team of Vancouver brothers has just published a guidebook to coffee houses in Oregop.
Entitled Oregon's Hot Java, the 176-page guide covers Java establishments in Greater Portland, Salem, Eugene and Astoria to Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.
The guide is the brainchild of Richard and Arthur Wolak. Elder brother Richard, who researched and sampled the many varieties of coffee available in Oregon, was co-author of Vancouver's Best Espresso Spots published in 1993.
When not drinking endless cups of coffee, Wolak is sales manager of Zipitti Graphics, which specializes in advertising promotions.
Arthur, who wrote and edited Oregon's Hot Java, holds a B.A. in psychology and a diploma in art history from UBC. He is currently enrolled in the MBA program at UBC.
In a telephone interview with The Bulletin, Richard said he saw the opportunity for a coffee guide over the course of several business trips to Oregon.
"Greater Portland was sprouting coffee bars at about the same rate as Vancouver," he explained. "The two cities seemed to be following the lead of Seattle," he told JWB:

told me they didn't know where to go for a coffee, I knew there would be a demand for a guidebook."
Asked why he went so far afield to write his second coffee guide, Wolak replied, "For the simple reason there are already three books written about the Seattle scene."
Wolak said Oregon's Hot Java is targetted, in addition to Oregonians, at the many Vancouverites who travel to Oregon for business and pleasure. The guide lists not only addresses and phone numbers, but also specialties, food and most popular drinks.
Wolak pointed out the book names several Jewish-owned and -operated coffee establishments in northwestern Oregon: in Portland, Murray's Bagels, Kornblatt's Deli, Grounds Coffeeworld, Cafe Lena, Malabar Coffeehouse and Coffee Emporium; in Eugene, Humble Bagel and Cafe Zenon; and in Cannon Beach, Midtown Cafe.
Wolak admitted that, while the Oregon guidebook was "doing really well", he has no plans at the moment to write another.
"The project was fun, but it involved a lot of travel and hard work. For three months I spent five days travelling around Oregon drinking coffee, driving back to Vancouver weekends to take care of my business here. That's enough."
Available in bookstores in Oregon and Washington, copies of the guide can be obtained in Vancouver at the Fine Grind in Kerrisdale.
UBC's Frederic Wood Theatre will have an international flavor this month as Israeli director Shimon Levy stages The House of Bernardo Alba by Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.
Levy is artistic director of Israel's Akko Festival and is a theatre professor at University of Tel Aviv. Vancouver branch of Friends of the University of Tel Aviv have assisted in funding his visit here.
Though JWB was unable to reach Levy for an interview before deadline, a press release outlines a few details about the Israeli director's project.
The House of Bernardo A Ibo is described as "the prison of the soul, a place of no escape, where a monstrous
authority crushes the dream of freedom and perpetuates its system by provoking sister against sister, by foment-* ing hatred and jealously and despair in the household."
If this sounds like Nazi Germany or a fascist republic, it's no mistake as Lorca's play attempts to analyze the forces of fascism — within the context of a family of women.
Bernardo Alba's plot focuses on an act of sexual rebellion by Adela who challenges Bernarda's regime of sterility and death.
Tragically, the playwright is a victim of his work. In August 1936, two months after finishing this play, Lorca was executed by Franco's fascist troops.
Bernardo Alba runs Sept. 21 to Oct. 1 at UBC. Ticket

Dear Shalom Vancouver:
I will be attending our Sisterhood's International Convention in the U.S. and after that plan to spend a couple of months visiting American relatives. Will my B.C. Medical Plan cover me while I am out of the country?
Esther C.
Dear Esther:
As long as your coverage is in good standing the Medical Services Plan of B.C. will help to pay for unexpected insured services which you receive anywhere in the world, provided that they are medically required.
Since such services provided outside Canada often cost more than the amount paid by the Ministry of Health, you should definitely consider buying travel insurance to supplement your basic coverage before you start your trip.
This travel insurance will pay any difference in medical costs, and also pay for services not covered by the Ministry of Health.
As an example, the B.C. Medical Services Plan will pay a maximum of $75 Canadian per day in hospital charges outside Canada and, as we are sure you realize, this amount would not get you very far if you required hospital treatment in the U.S.
Some doctors outside Canada will not bill the Medical Services Plan directly, so you must submit a claim yourself. Claim forms are available from M.S.P., Box 2000, Victoria, B.C., V8W 2Y4, and must be submitted within six months of the date of service.
You must submit your claim to M.S.P. before you send it to your private insurance company. The Plan will settle its portion of the claim and you can apply to the private insurer for additional payment.
