WASHINGTON — Members of Congress turned up the volume of protest against the Vatican's knighthood of Kurt Waldheim last month.
Led by U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), 30 House members signed a letter urg-
ing the Vatican "in the strongest terms" to rescind Waldheim's knighthood.
In a July 6 ceremony in Vienna, Waldheim was made a member of the Ordine Piano, an order of knights named directly by Pope John Paul II.

The new co-owners of Vancouver's oldest kosher market are no strangers to the business.
Renee Moses and Steve Hertzman have operated kosher businesses in Sydney, Australia and Toronto respectively.
But a search for new lifestyles led the pair to their purchase last month of Leon*s Kosher Korner. Now re-named Aviv's Kosher Meats, Moses and Hertz-man have already made physical changes to the shop and have plans to expand product lines.
In an interview with JWB, Moses told how she and Hertzman became owners of the shop and their plans for the future.
The India-born Moses was raised in Australia. She founded Sydney's well-known King David Bakery and Moses Spice Centre. But after the death of her husband a few years ago, she began to "feel the isolation" of living in Australia.
A planned four-day trip to Vancouver to visit rela-
tives turned into a 10-week stay when Moses fell in love with the city.
A subsequent tour of North America convinced her that "many areas had a crying need" for kosher
charge of business in Sydney and relocated to Vancouver. Hertzman moved his wife and two daughters out to the coast and the pair set about implementing changes they envision for the business.

markets, she related. Moses identified three cities where she thought she might relocate — Chicago, Philadelphia and Vancouver — and then left the decision to someone else.
"I happened to be in New York and thought I would ask the (late Rebbe Mena-chem Schneerson) for his opinion. He chose Vancouver," Moses recalled.
Meanwhile, Hertzman, a family friend of Moses and the owner of a kosher bulk food market, was looking to escape Toronto's harsh winters.
A call from Moses convinced him to come out and look at the possibilities in Vancouver.
Within three months, Moses had left her son in

Physical changes so far include more display cases and the addition of an eating bar and outside seating.
More takeout food is available, including barbecued chickens, chicken schnitzels, salads and some Sephardic cuisine.
Moses said she is awaiting the arrival of a shwarma machine that will enable Aviv's to offer spit-roasted turkey in pita bread.
The new co-owner said the store will be expanding the bakery, grocery, meats and dairy lines. More varieties of turnovers, strudels and bagels will soon be available, Moses revealed.
And the market will carry Chai brand chickens in the near future as well as more glatt kosher meats and cold-cuts, she said.
In response to demand, Aviv's will also introduce more types of cheese in random weights.
Aviv's is now. offering catering services and platters for Bar/Bat-Mitzvahs and other simchas, plus a one-
ously. And to show they mean it, Moses indicated the market will soon offer hot dogs and hamburgers in response to numerous requests.
Although the first few weeks of business have been hectic, Moses said she has received many compliments from customers for the spotless, new look of the market.
The Beth Hamidrash member said the store is planning an Oct. 9 grand opening. Former owner Leon Wenger, who is helping in the transition period, will be thanked for his years of service to the community, Moses pointed out.
In the meantime, Moses said they have their "work cut out" for them.
"It's a good thing my kids are grown and I have no one to go home to, because I'm married to this business now," she laughed. "And I'm sure the Vancouver Jewish community will be the beneficiary of that union."
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Citing sexual discrimination, a recent immigrant from South Africa has petitioned the High Court of Justice to force the Israeli air force to allow her to join a pilot training course.
Alice Miller, 22, brought the petition with support of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel after the air force rejected her application.
She claimed sexual discrimination alone was behind the rejection, since she had obtained a civilian air pilot license before emigrating to Israel and has since earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from Tech-nion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.
The air force, which was given 45 days to prepare its response to Miller's petition, said its refusal to let her take the course was based on the Israel Defense Force's opposition to allowing women to serve in combat areas.
The IDF already employs women soldiers as instructors for tanks, artillery and other front-line equipment, but not in combat.
Miller claims that IDF policy not only prevents her from becoming a fighter pilot but also bars her from most senior army positions.
Beverley Stein, chairman, said, "The response for our fourth weekend has been overwhelming. We really can't handle more than 300 people and we may have to turn people away if they wait until the last minute to make reservations."
The weekend includes mixers, dinners, dances and workshops for singles by nationally-acclaimed singles authority Robert Bruce Starr.
All Jewish Singles aged 30 and over are included. To obtain a brochure, contact Annie Trott, (901) 767-8511. Or write Singles Weekend, Jewish Family Service, 6560 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38138.
