the "root of unhappiness."
About 375 people attended Dr. Feld mar's March 13 talk, presented by Jewish Family Service Agency, at Teinple Sholom.
''Unhappiness is not a psychological or mental disorder," Dr. Feldmar proclaimed, but a social issue which starts with a newborn's exposure to "enormously complicated fields of power."
For example, parents, family and neighborhoods generate power directly; decisions made by people one doesn't even know — such as economists, politicians and legislators — generate power indirectly.
When seeing a person who is trapped in "powerlessness", a therapist has to recognize that he too was, at one time, trapped similarly, the psychologist observed^
A therapist has to choose between practising what Dr. Feldmar termed "prison therapy" or "free therapy." That is, dealing with people "who have given up, who are locked up in their own unhappiness and who seek to be taught how to endure what is going on in their life" or therapy "for the free".
Feldmar said he prefers working with people who want to break out of the "prison" and adapt to a "new environment of freedom," Punctuating his point, he noted, "Sometimes I feel like I am working in a Southern plantation and J entice people to go Notth!"
Pain, feir; fatigue, boredom, indecisiveness,. compulsion, unreciprocated desires, loss of control, realization that the "world can do without ypp/' ,v}Ae|e some
examples Dr. Feldmar cited as to what makes people unhappy.
"When we continue to do, when we don't know what to do, when we enjoy the struggle of life and we understand that it is not the correct answer which is important, but the correct question, then we attain freedom."
Happiness is achieved when one can create an "environment of self-discovery and have the courage to accept our decisions without living by what would have been or should have been," he declared.
Answering to many audience questions. Dr. Feldmar identified power struggles and behavioral patterns, giving factual examples with a high dose of humor.
Asked about the role of psychology in court, the speaker opined that "given that psychology is not an exact science, it should not be used in establishing a person's guilt or innocence."
JFSA counsellor Ellen Shapiro introduced the speaker and thanked the audience for supporting JFSA educational events.

This turned out to be the closest finals ever with the Gators having the fortune of winning the opening game 3-2; the second game was tied at two; and game three was really a 2-2 tie.
The Gators had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fmal when Mike Ragosin fired in a goal early in the first period.
Rob Chetner tied it for the Panthers midway through the second period, getting a loose puck with the goalie down and firing it into the open net.
Jory Simkin restored the Gator lead in the third picking up a rebound and finding the corner of the goal.
Rony Zimerman tied it again with 15 minutes remaining. The Panthers mounted a frantic attack after that but couldn't beat Jeff Korsunsky in the Gator
