A note or two on klezmer
The mother-of-all-klezmer pages is just a click away.
HILARY OSTROV SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN
The International du Mau-rier Jazz Festival was just in town, so that's inspired me to take a travel on the miisical scene, with a twist. Let's go klezmer travelling. Current news can be found in the musical notes of The Cincinnati Klezmer Project. This page is counter-commercialism at its finest, IMHO. (That's "Netspeak" for In My Humble Opinion.) It is "devoted to making public domain Klezmer and Jewish music arrangements available to people interested in starting Klezmer ensembles."
Free for the point-and-click downloading are images of klezmer music. Chusen Kalah Mazel Tov looks quite pretty, actually. I might even print it out — without fear of violating copyright. Joshua Moss, the keeper of the page, advises that "you are free to reproduce... but you may not sell."
You should also take a look at the Hot Latkes Klezmer Band page. At first I had some doubts as to the authenticity of this London, Ont. band, because they admit to "delving into Ladino and Yemenite Jewish music as well as Greek and Gypsy music." My doubts dissipated instantly — as soon as I saw the band's "Official Latke Recipe." The requisite onion was present and account-Hilary Ostrov o/ATeu; Westminster is a "Webaholic" consultant and educator who offers Internet "driving lessons". Call 525-3055.
ed for, ergo, the Hot Latkes Klezmer Band must be kosher.
Still, the virtual reality remains: the mother-of-all-klezmer pages is Ari Davidow's Klezmer Page. Here you will find news, reviews and bands in your area. Not to mention links to related information. The latest addition to this comer of the Web is "The Klez Top Ten (more or less)." However, Davidow does caution the browsing public: "(This list is] just for fim."
He adds, "Anyone who accepts this unprofessional methadolo-gy [sic] as realistically rating anything other than hits (possibly from one source) on my klezmer pages is losing a grip."
No. 1 on Davidow's Top Ten is currently "Cayuga Klezmer Revival." His review almost caused me to desert my keyboard and hop in my car to find this gem:
"Wow. As I begin to type these words, the tape is just beginning to get really into an amazing original tune called Wanderer's Song,' one of the few openly non-traditional numbers on this album. Something is beginning to thrum in my head, my feet are tapping the floor, I gotta get up and dance. I am so much in awe. This song is one of the most lucid, soulful fusions of klez and rock that I have ever heard. And it's just one of 15 amazing songs..."
It was Gershwin, was it not, who wrote the wonderful song, that always plays in my head when I think of the late, great Ella Fitzgerald, "Who could ask for anything more?" □
