The whole truth about the Nazis
BOAZ DVIR SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN
Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, an assistant professor of government and social studies at Harvard University has a controversial new book, Hitler's Willing Executioner: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust.
In it, he argues that the number of perpetrators was far higher, and their attitude about carrying out the task was far more favorable than | most historians believe. He also differs with most other historians about the Germans' motives, saying it was widespread anti-Semitism, not social pressure or political obedience, that pushed Germans to kill six million Jews. Hitler's Willing Executioners will be published in Germany in September. It will also be published in France, Italy and Brazil. "So far," he said, "there is no Israeli publisher."
The book has already created controversy in Canada and abroad.
ORDINARY GERMANS
J.B. - Did you expect this book to be controversial?
Mr, Goldhagen - I did not expect the amount of attention that the book has been receiving, and I never expected this much criticism.
Were you surprised to find that many of the crltlcs.are Jewish?
I believe that a discussion of the issue should focus on topics such as the methods of research, the findings - not on the identities and motives of the researchers. That is a disservice to people.
Why did you write this boolc?
I wrote it to fill what I consider to be a gap in knowledge about the Holocaust. By the details of the action given by the perpetrators themselves, by the zeal with which they pursued their task, you have to conclude that they were anti-Semites who believed in what Hitler believed.
So there was not just one Hitler In Germany, but many little Hitlers?
Hitler was an extraordinary person. But in regard to the Jews, his philosophy was widely believed.
Was It Hitler who made the Germans believe this?
The model for anti-Semitism was already in place before Hitler. It intensified after he came.
Boaz Dvir writes the Bulletin's monthly Israel Beat column.
Did the anti-Semitism talce on a different dimension - becoming more "scientific" and less religious?
The term I use is "elimina-tionist." It is different fi-om religious anti-Semitism in that Jews could not be saved. It's a very important diiference. There's a chilling proclamation by the leaders of several (German) Protestant churches in 1941 that said that Jews are incapable of being saved by baptism. Can you imagine how radical this is?
During the Second World War, did most Germans know the Holocaust was taking place?
In general, few knew that the so-called Final Solution was an official policy being carried out by the government. But knowledge of Jews being killed en masse and systematically was well known. Hitler declared publicly many times that the war will end with the extermination of the Jews. Of course many knew. Did everyone know - no. Did people know it was a formal policy - no. But did they know it was taking place en masse - yes.
Did this and other findings shock you?
In this field, you either get used to shocking material and become detached and clinical, or you can't continue working. Yet even I, who reads horror stories for a living, found stories that shocked me. □
