Falcons flying high
Sandpipers crushed in light holiday schedule.
DAVID TAUSSIG SPORTS COLUMNIST
Due to the holiday weekend last week, it was a qui-eter-than-normal schedule in the Vancouver Jewish Community Center Softball League. However, the Cardinals prevailed in a close-fought
battle with the Hawks 8-6, while the Falcons won another easy one, this time 16-5 over the Sandpipers.
In the Cardinals victory, both teams relied on good pitching and defence. Irv Hochman star<> ed the game for the Cardinals but left after the fifth inning due to an injury. Jeff Korsunsky took over and shut the Hawks out the rest of the way.
Micha Menczer pitched well the whole way for the Hawks. Most of the offence for the Cardinals was provided by Rocky Poison, David Book, and Rowe-na Raber, who all went three-for-three at the plate. For the Hawks, Phil Elchitz and Josh Hauser kept going deep to keep the Hawks close.
The other match-up saw the Falcons win another, as they continue to cruise along atop the standing. The Falcons got out to an early lead and never looked back. The Sandpipers attempted a small comeback late in the game but it was too little, too late.
Mark Rogen again gave the Falcons some outstanding pitching with his pinpoint accuracy. Barry Garfield had a strong game in left field, coming up with several tough balls and also going three-for-four with his batting. Jaqui Sankoff also had a good game at the plate, going three-for-four as well. □
