Lake gets docked
Ice buildup causes thousands of dollars in damage at Okanagan's Camp Hatlkvah.
BAILA LAZARUS STAFF REPORTER
A partially damaged dock at Camp Hatlkvah. Since May, when this picture was taken, the middle span has also been lifted and destroyed by the rising waters.
Winter storms may have given skiers in the Okanagan extra powder to have some fun with but it was no fUn for the administrators of Camp Hatikvah. The harsh weather left the Okanagan Ccmip without their swimming docks.
Brian Chavin, vice-president of maintenance for the camp, said severe ice'built up on Lake Kalamalka where the camp is situated. When the ice started breaking up in the spring, strong winds pushed the ice toward shore, along with the docks.
"It knocked all the docks off their pilings," Mr. Chavin said, "and it ended up destroying all three docks." The large buildup in the snow
pack also had its effect. It resulted in water levels so high the docks couldn't be repaired right away. Reconstruction is now taking place and all the docks should be finished by the third week of July, said Mr. Chavin. In the meantime, children are attending the camp and all programs are operating as normal.
The docks, the largest of which is 72 feet, are used for swimming. Until they are fixed, the children are being transported by canoe to a beach on the lake where they take their lessons.
Mr. Chavin estimated repair costs at around $50,000. He said he's not sure if the camp is covered by insurance for the damage. □
