Editor:
As the year 5757 approaches and Jews around the world prepare for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, let us reflect upon the events of the past 12 months.
Here in Canada, the year was marked by several important developments. In Quebec, the referendum was defeated, although the voting results revealed the extent to which opinion remains divided over the future of the province and the country.
B'nai Brith Canada's League for Human Rights reported that while racism and hate continue to plague our society, organized hate activity has declirjed, due in part to sentence enhancement for hate-motivated crimes and the proliferation of hate/bias crime units in police forces across the country.
Unfortunately, the government has yet to silence Ernst Zundel, who inches ever closer to obtaining Canadian citizenship. Nor has the government improved significantly upon its record of prosecuting alleged Nazi war criminals, as seen in the court's recent stay on technical grounds of three deportation cases.
Two recent favorable findings in the Nemsila case, however, leave us hopeful and the Institute for International Affairs of B'nai Brith Canada, through its intervener status, will continue its strident efforts to bring him and others to justice.
May the year 5757 bring peace to Jewish communities around the world and to all humanity.
