Kiss me-not
Editor:
Underneath Kiss' leather and makeup are a couple of starving souls. The fact that the founding members have Jewish roots is downright embarrassing. Otherwise, we found absolutely nothing redeeming or newsworthy about your Kiss story ("Kiss and tell," JB Aug. 30).
It would be truly noble if Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley would choose to resume their Torah studies. It would also be a mitzvah for the Jewish community to reach out and nurture these impecunious rieshamas (souls) with some Yiddishkeit.
So what have we learned about this "art" subject? We learn that Mr. Simmons is a promiscuous idol worshipper who values getting a "piece of butt" and "the raw power of being able
to manipulate the audience."
Had it been reported that these "role models" had been using their fame and fortune to contribute to Tikkun Olam (saving the world) in any way — even in a small way — then that would have been newsworthy for a Jewish paper. Instead, we learn that a rock group from 25 years ago, of which the two founding members, who lack high moral standards by any yardstick, happen to be Jewish, is making a comeback (Okay, so they exercise regularly. Yippe.).
Undoubtedly, there are many more worthwhile venues currently playing and upcoming in Vancouver that you could have writtcsn alxaut in that one- and two-third pages of valuable space.

Rethink allocations
Editor:
I wish to add to the discussion which was begun in the Aug. 30 article, "Who will fund our schools?". The four main Jewish schools (Talmud Torah, Mai-monides, Hebrew Academy and Richmond Jewish Day School) do receive nearly 20 percent of Federation's total fundraising pot of $4.1 million. It should be noted, though, that they receive approximately 40 percent of funds . allocated locally, net campaign costs. The amount given to the supplemental schools is nominal (1 percent).
Perhaps Federation ought to have a thorough discussion, rethink its allocations and dramatically alter its school funding pohcy. We can create an enriching and beneficial supplemental education program throughout the Lower Mainland to address the growing needs of our community.

Add school to list
Editor:
It was brought to my attention that in your Aug. 30 issue there was a listing of Hebrew schools operating in the Lower Mainland. Unfortunately, the school that the White Rock/South Surrey Jewish Community Centre has been running was not mentioned.
Our Hebrew school has been operating for two years with an average enrolment of 50 children. Our school is run on Sundays and this year will be commencing on Sept. 29 at the Wliite Rock Seniors Activity Centre. The school runs fix)m 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. with classes for children from preschool up to Grade 7. The students are taught both Hebrew

and traditional Jewish subjects such as Torah, history and holidays.
The centre's office number is 541-9995. Inquiries may also be directed to our children's education chairpersons, Steve Andrews, at 535-3372 or Jo Ann Granek at 574-2512.
