Benefit for doc's family
Abenefit is being held for the wife and children of Vancouver pediatrician Dr. Robert Tabakman who died recently.
The Dr. Robert Tabakman Memorial Concert is set for April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Sholom, 7190 Oak St. Dr. Tabakman died suddenly on Dec. 31 at age 30. He was a pediatrician in Uzbekistan, one of the breakaway republics of the former Soviet Union. He immigrated to Canada in December 1993 with his wife Alexandra and daughter Natalia, now six. His six-m'onth-old son Lenard was bom shortly before his death. '
The family immigrated because of the drastic and sometimes fearful „ „ . ^ changes taking ^r. Robert place in the newly-independent country, said Mrs. Tabakman, 27. "As Jewish people, we felt different," she said.
Medical degrees from the former Soviet country are not recognized in Canada, so Dr. Tabakman spent two years studying for his medical exams to requalify as a physician here, said Mrs. Tabakman, who sup-
ported him during that period. "He was strong, decent and determined," Mrs. Tabakman said. "He was good to all people."
Dr. Tabakman was accepted last year for a pediatric internship at the Maimonides Medical Centre in New York City. He was in Vancouver on leave when he died in December.
Mrs. Tabakman, an accountant, is supporting her family as well as her parents Bella and Dmitriy, who arrived here from Uzbekistan in June 1995.
The benefit will be an evening of music. Guest artists include pianists Eugene Osadchy, Marina Vinnitsky and Marilyn Glazer as well as comedy mimes Max & Vlad. Singer Elena Steel and accompanist Alexander Schwartz-man, flutist Camille Churchfield and Terence Dawson are also in the lineup.
Admission is $10 a person. Tickets can be bought in advance by mailing a cheque to Temple Sholom. Tickets can be picked up at either the Jewish Family Service Agency or the synagogue. □
