Richmond school moving
KYLE BERBER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN
With almost three times as many students as when it started in 1991, the Richmond Jewish Day School has outgrown its current facility and is planning for a new home.
Currently housed in an oversized trailer in the back of the Beth Tikvah Centre and Congregation's parking lot, the elementary school has grown from 55 students to 140 and has just celebrated its first graduation.
The school, established by a group of Richmond parents who didn't want to send their children to Vancouver for a Jewish education, will vacate its original location and move a few blocks down the street to Number 5 Road between Blundell and Williams.
The timing of the move, which
has been tenta- _^
tively set for either January, 1998 or January, 1999, will depend on financial support from the community.
"We felt we needed support from the community first, and we received very good support," said the chair of the re-location committee, Marvin Lithwick, referring to $150,000 the internal parent group has already raised for the move. "We've met with a lot of success, but we need to have a lot more." The school has held several successful fund-raising events which have also provided information to the community.
Richmond Jewish Day School is moving on down the road.
A sock hop with a silent auction in June raised approximately $10,000 for the school. Students helped by showing off their talents in a "Zimriah," where several different youth organizations gathered together for a Jewish song festival.
The school has also raised funds with the help of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver through telethons and mailouts.
The school, which celebrated the graduation of its first Grade Seven class in June, welcomes and represents students fi^m all ^^^^^^ denominations of Judaism. The students have taken part in such community events as the Walk for Israel and have also been successfully represented in public speaking contests. "We are a ^^^^^^ community school and we want to educate all the children that want to have a Jewish education," said school President Susy Siegal.
The new facility, measuring 7,200 square feet on a 2.35 acre site, will provide space for three more classrooms, a gym and a library. A WORD FROMI
Q. How should one select a Jewish name for a child?
A. Jewish names are entirely the choice of the parents and need not correspond to anv other names given to the child. When naming a child after another person, the soul of the child develops an afllnity to the soul of the one after whom the child is being named. Sefardim give names after people who are alive or deceased; Ashkenazim name only after the deceased.
