Quickly, we turn to the Haggadah and burst forth into HAL-LEL, "praise" the same Hal-lel sung some twenty centuries ago in the Temple, and by David a millenium before that! Praise for what? For the courage of having lived through it all, to proclaim to mankind now as then the message and the plea of FREEDOM. Praise for the deathless hope that Hallel will yet again be sung in a Temple in Jerusalem! S'FIRAH "counting," or S'FIR AT HA-OMER, "the counting of the days of omer." (see OMER). SHABBAT HA-GODOL "The Great Sabbath." Name given to the Sabbath preceding Pass- over. Numerous explanations are given for the adjective "great". 1. Because of the miracle spoken of in the Midrash, supposed to have taken place on the historic Sabbath before the Exodus. (10th of Nisan). According to that account the Egyptians found themselves helpless to defend the "lamb", a deity of theirs, from its sacrificial slaughtering by the Israelites. 2. Because on this Sabbath there is generally a "great," i.e. "long" service in the synagogue, owing to the special sermon or lecture of the rabbi, dealing with laws of Passover. 3. Because in the Haftorah for that Sabbath there is the verse (Mai. 3:23) which speaks of the GREAT day of the Lord: "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord." 4. One authority believes that the word HA-GODOL is a corruption of the word HAGGADAH, and that the Sabbath is so named because the Haggadah should then be read. 5. I^eopold Zunz, a historian, traces this designation to Christian origin, since the Church Fathers used to call the Saturday before Easter Sunday "great". TA'ANIT B'HORIM "The fast of the first-born". The first born male in many an orthodox home fasts on Erev (day before Pesach. as a manifestation of devotion and gratitude to God for having spared the firstborn among the Jews in Egypt. Z'ROA Roasted shankbone, placed on the Seder dish, reminiscent of the paschal lamb sacrificed in Egypt, and in the days of the Temple. This article is from the Jewish Youth Journal.
