COMMENDS RUSSIAN JEWRY COVERAGE
Dear Mr. Kaplan:
We are most impressed by how much material on Soviet Jews is printed in The Bulletin.
Russian Jews often wonder if their voices are really heard. We try to articulate their desires, and you are concenied enough to disseminate this articulation throughout Western Canada. Simply thanks.
GLENN RICHTER, National Coordinator, Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, New York.

(Continued from Page 2) last 2,000 years of that tradition and threw them out of their book.
They declared that they were not "mere" Jews continuing the Return to Zion that had never ceased, but New Hebrews restoring the link with the Hebrews of old by driving Hebrew ploughs into the Hebrew soil. .
To them, "Jew" and "Jewish" and the entire worldview and lifestyle associated with these designations, were an unnatural thing which the Gentiles had imposed on us in Exile; and Jews were "human dust" ( a term Ben-Gurion liked to use) to be brought back to the Hebrew soil, mixed with Hebrew water, and have Hebrew breath infused into them.
In throwing out those 2,000 years of Jewish life and creation and in depreciating "Jews," the Ben-Guripn generation ( who knew what ^*Jew" and "Jewish" were — even if they gravely misjudged them) deprived their heirs of that knowledge and, therefore, of a sense of Jewish continuity and of a sense of the importance of teaching the continuity of Jewishness in general and in this land particularly.
As a result, so very many of the children raised on the Zionist curriculum — including some raised on Religious Zionism — grew up thinking that Jewish history — modern Jewish history, in any case -r began with them^ and not understanding why, if the Jews in general and in this land particularly, had no history for 2,000 years, they had been brought here to be turned into Hebrews at the expense presumably, of the "Palestinians" already living here.
_ SOME YEAR AFTER thQ establishment of the State, some members of the Ben-Gurion generation began to see the fruits of their Neo-Hebraic concept, and were dismayed.
Their reaction, mainly during the tenure of the late Zalman Aranne as Minister of Education and Culture, was the institution of a program of "Jewish Consciousness" in Israel's schools.
Since so many Israeli teachers were a product of this Neo-Hebraism, this program meant, too far too great an extent, that people who themselves knew little of, and believed even less in, Jewishness were teaching children what this had meant to the dead granc^arents of some of them -r- mainly in Eastern Europe.
The great Jewish communities of North Africa and Asia, and even, of the Balkans, were barely mentioned in passing.
EVEN THE HISTORY of the Jews in Eretz Yisrael after the Bar-Kochba Revolt was barely mentioned: after all, the Jews living here through all those centuries had not been Zionists and had established no kibbutzim.
Can one hope that the present surge of Zionist and Jewish identification throughout the world will lead to more than Zionist tags and quizzes and parades, and the Zionization of Israeli buses?
Can one hope that Israel's leaders and teachers will have the courage to admit their mistakes and seize the opportunity created by the UN vote to correct them?
