Matzoh is in the same class as other types of food in other cities. Its manufacture and distribution lie in private hands and are a source of profit to individuals. In Vancouver from time immemorial the sale of Matzoh has lain in the hands of the commimity. The Talmud Torah has always arranged for the pxirchase and the profits have formed no small part of the income of the institution. There are many saving features in this aside from the mere profit to the educational institution. The cost of the Matzoh to the committee is lower than it v/ould be to small private importers, because the committee buys for the whole community. Sale expenditures are lower, too, because most of the work is done, voluntarily, by public-spirited citizens who give generously of their time. " Moes Chitin, the traditional phUcmthropy accompanying the purchase of Matzoh is efficiently carried out, in a manner impossible where the distribution is haphazard and imcontrolled. And finally, the educational value of buying from the commimity for the profit and benefit of tke community can hardly ije reckoned in terms of dollars and cents. It strengthens communal consciousness and loyalty. All in all, it is a custom of which Vancouver can be well proud, as an example of community organization. Rabbi J. L. ZIotnick, of the Congregation Schara Tzedek and mem-. ber of the Vancouver Talmud Torah Committee, urges Vancouver Jews to place.their Matzoh orders with the Talmud Torah Matzoh Committee. He emphasizes the need of the educational institution^ at the present moment, and expressed the hope that.Vancouver; Jews will follow the practice of' previous years and maintain communal co-operation. TO THE JEWISH PUBLIC OF VANCOUVER: With the first seder night on Wednesday, April 17th, Vancouvet Jevrary vdlljoia world Jewry in celebrating Passover, and the officers of the Vancouver Talmud Torah extend to all Vancouver Jewish citizens their sincefest wishes for a truly happy holiday, imbued with the beauty and solemnity of the feast of liberation. As in other years the Vancouver Talmud Torah committee has provided an adequate supply of fresMj baked matzoth from the best known and most reliable firms in the United States. The Talmud Torah committee appeals to Vancouver Jewry to avail themselves of this ppportumty offered them to purchase their matzoth froni the Tahhud Torah and wishes to remind the public once again that the entire profit from the sale is devoted to the cause of the religious and Hebrew education of your children. We are confident that the whole community will support the community Talmud Torah, and will pay no attention to the individuals who attempt to make a private profit which is diverted from the Talmud Torah. You now have an opportunity to show your interest in the cause of the Talmud Torah and in the principle of commmial organization. BUY YOUR MATZOTH FROM THE TALMUD TORAH! Rabbi Samuel Cass of the Congregation Beth Israel and ardent worket) for the Talmud .Torah called on all Jews to observe the Passover holidays in the i)roper manner and to help the communal educational bodies by buying matzoh from the Talmud Torah Committee. "The Talmud Torah is an institution that should be the prime interest of every Jew here," he said, "and this interest is well and concretely displayed in the, support of the Matzoh committee." . ' A LIE EXPOSED These lines are written in tense moments. The nations of Europe are alarmed and are counting their guns. War is in the air. The national capitals are negotiating hurriedly and suspiciously, and at the same time are taking steps to protect Themselves from attacks and raids. It is another war scare, not the first, but the most serious since the Armistice, and its seriousness is of so grave a nature as to endanger the whole delicate status of international life. We are not afraid that the present crisis wiU bring on a war. We do not believe it was intended to do that. Hitler intends to reach a new status quo through this crisis that will be. more favorable to his miUtaristic ambitions. And at this moment we wish to point out and to record that the new danger to the peace of the world was created by the government of Adolph Hitler, whose agent recently assured Vancouver that Germany is not militaristic. We*also wish to make it clear that what Nazi Germany is now aiming at is not mere equality or disarmament of all European nations, but actual superiority over Great Powers. That such policies are provocative of armament races and of v/ars is of course indubitable. What is more to the point at the present moment is that the agents of Hitler in Vancouver are partaking of hospitality and courtesy procured on the basis of a lie. Present day Germany stands in the world today self-accused of falsehood and treachery. It is the duty of all liberal and peave-loving elements to face these facts and to make them known to all. Germany must be placed before the world in its true light. from the TE^^money goes to the Talmud are helping this woiihy instit^ ing direct from us—at a saving to you!
