Fire lights up tlie sky The name has changed, but Vancouver's annual fireworks tradition continues this year. Formerly known as the Symphony of Fire, this year's festivities are called Celebration of Light. The show begins, rain or shine, at 10:15 p.m. over English Bay. Organizers say the best vantage points arc English Bay beach, Ktsilano, Vanier Park and West Vancouver. Seasoned fans loiow that any small rise or gentle hill in the city becomes a vantage point when the bangs begin. Herc is the line-up: • Saturday, July 28 - South Afiica presents a show themed "CJosmos." Look for their special spherical and cylindrical shells. • Wednesday, Aug. 1 - China presents "Odyssce" featuring high-altitude rings, comets, chrysanthemums, candles and special silver and red effects. • Saturday, Aug. 4 - Spain lights up the skies with "Soul to Fire," with golden palm trees, crowns, strobes and spikes. • Wednesday, Aug. 8 - The grande finale, featuring highlights fh)m all three countries. Each presentation is accompanied by a variety of classical and contemporary music, which can be heard simulcast on Rock 101 FM. In past years, city officials have urged fireworks fans to use public transit. If the TransLink strike continues until then, expect bedlam.
