(Continued from Page 58) type of responsibility in migration issuance of its corporate affidavit. This is provided in cases where adequate individual affidavits are not available. Immigrants wlhose visas are based on the United Service affidavit constitute only a fraction of all whom the agency assists. Many of those ooming on affidavits of others (turn to the "United" for assistance they cannot obtain elsewhere. Nevertheless, the figures on corporate affidlavits are signifigantOf 13ie 2974 immigrants who arrived on corporate affidavits aboard the first six ships from Euroipe, USNA is the affiant for 1830. In addition, USNA carries corporate responsibility for all 824 of the former Jewish residents of the Oswego Shelter, The work on behalf of the concentration camp survivors immigrating imder this so-called European Project is perhaps the most dramatic. At the same time immigration of refugees to the U.S. from other countries throughout the world has increased. These people must and do receive the same kind of comprhensive service from USNA. For example, when the first ship bringing refugees from Shanghai arrived in San Francisco, it was United Service which provided for their reception and arranged for them to pro-ceedl to their final destinations throughout the United States and Canada. Most a£ this group were rabbinical scholars who had escaped from Poland early in the war. A large number came to orthodox seminaries in New York. United Service arranged for their trip by special Pullman, paying their fare and all expenses. This was but one incident in an intensive operation bringing new challenges every day, Each phase of the United Services program imder the Truman directive is a story in itself. The work for orphaned children, fos example, involves srpecial care by a group of [highly tramed experts in a sep-erate reception center operated by the European Jewish C3iildren's Aid, affiliated with United Service. The outstanding character of this program is indicated by ithe fact that Protestant and Catholic agencies keep their children in the EJCA shelter, where th^ eat the same strictly kosher diet that is provided for the Jewish yoxmg-sters! The fervent greeting of new a-rrivals at the piers by their rel-fitives and friends is accompanied by a complete welfare service provided by "United" on the spot. The agency operates a big service desks to which immigrants come as part of the routine of disembarkation. If kin are waiting to meet them, they are helped to find each other in the crowd by the agency's public ad|dress ^stem, operated for the benefit of all passengers, Jew or Christian, repatriated Americans or immigrant aliens. A large group of volimteers from the New York, Brooklyn, Newark, and other sections of NC JW in the metropolitan area, is on hand to steer new arrivals through the official maze, to answer a thousand and one questions, help mothers with babies, provide reassurance, and perform the many small and large services required to smooth the way. For those who are to join re-atives outside New York, transportation arrangements are made; they are escorted to trains, planes, or buses, and notice is telegraphed •to their destinations. Those who are to remain in New York for even a few hoTurs are brought to the United Service hospitality centre in a modest but comfortable uptown hoteL Rooms, meals and other necessities are provided without charge. Here the newcomers enjoy what are for them the luxuries of a comfortable bed, tasty meals, and, above all, privacy. To many a couple or family, accustomed for years to life in barracks, a private room is the best thing about the whole dream-like ex-X>erience of their first days in America. Those without kin in the United States, or definite plans, are introduced promptly to the United Service resettlement program.
