It is tragic indeed that the greeting of "Happy New Year" or "LeShana Tovo" will have a Jiollow ring for many thousands of Jews in Europe, as we begin the year 5707. In the days immediately following V-E Day hope ran high for true deliverence of the scarred and shattered remnants of the Jewish people who had survived the horrors of Hitlerism Now that a year of continued sorrow and suffering is passing into history we are confronted with a record of homelessness, distress and despair in post-war Jewish life that must cause deep concern to every Jew. The fact that Jews could be thrown behind barbed wire enclosures for the crime of seeking refuge in Palestine, tiie fact that Jews by the tens of thousands could be forced to wander over the hij^ways of Europe in flight from persecution—^all these tragic events have combined to cast a deep and dark shadow on the hope for the survival of Eiu*opean Jewry.
In the midst of great difficulties and critical problems of relief and resettlement, the J.D.C., U.P.A., and the N.R.S. (USNA) are going forward v/ith far-ranging operations that are the very backbone of the new future for European Jewry. The J.D.C. is now engaged in the greatest program of assistance to Jews in its thirty-one years of activity, bringing aU forms of aid to Jewish commimities in fifty cotmtries in almost every comer of the globe. Despite the present disturbed situation in Palestirie, the United Palestine Appeal is making it possible for the 625,000 Jews in the Jewish homeland to continue the work of upbuilding and settlement so that large masses of homeless Jews who seek to find a new home there may achieve their greatest hope. It is the paramount desire of the Jews of Palestine to keep up and increase its task of construction for the salvation of large sections of the Jewish people. With the increase of refugee immigration into the United States, tihie National Refugee Service (United Service for New Americans) is carrying on an extensive adjustment program to provide for the speedy integration of the 2,000 displaced persons who are reaching these ^ores every month.
As we enter the year 5707, it is evident that the Jewish people have been for the most part left to their own resources to shape their destiny. Because so little intergovernmental assistance has been forthcoming, the action of American Jews, through the United Jewish Appeal, represents the most vital factor in the rescue of the Jewish people from fear, want and homelessness. It is for this reason that on the New Year our thoughts and our hearts must be attimed to the great and piercing cry for brotherly understanding and help that comes to us from across the seas. Again it is we who must decide what kind of a New Year our brothers and sisters shall have. It is this basic fact that must be uppermost in our minds when we say "Happy New Year."
