Over 4,000 machines and other mechanical equipment, have been made available to Israeli artisans by this unique organization. 160 agricultural settlements, many of them in the remote regions of the Negev.and. along the troubled borders where self-sufficiency is often, crucial to; survival, have been supplied by PUT with workshop equipment. It is estimated that 12,000 persons, a considerable proportion of them recent immigrants, have been" rendered productive and independent through the activities of ORT Tool Supply. Many a Jewish mechanic who arrives in Israel with empty hands is referred to ORT Tool Supply by government and community agencies. Here he obtains the means to re-establish himself economically. A number of, these former For Fdrnis Israel maabarath dwellers have expanded their shops to the point of employing other newcomers. ^ Now rounding out its fifth year, the Cprporation functions as a s|)ecial ORT service, distinct from the extensive network of vocational training centres maintained by ORT in Israel, although one of its jobs is to equip ORT school graduates with the means to practice their acquired trades. As an example, in the back streets of Tel Aviv, ORT has set up a rug weaving school for Persian and Kurdish immigrants, for whom rug making is an indi-^ genous handicraft. Students are supplied with looms on which they learn to weave Israeli patterns into carpets. In this way anew industry is being develop^-ed and an ancient art is coming to flourish in the ^oung state. * . * * NEW FARM.
