day, September 14, 1962 JEWISH WESTERN BULLETIN Vage 5 NOmULPAN EXPERT TO VISIT HERE AHAHON ROSENNE . . . author of Eleph Milim Arrangements have just been concluded for a one-day visit to Vancouver on September 25 of one of the world's most prominent Hebrew educators, Aharon Rosenne, pioneer and expert in the development of the Ulpanim in Israel, Canada and the U.S.A. He will conduct workshops here with both Vancouver Ulpan Institute teachers and Vteachers of the Talmud Tor ah and the Congregational schools on the new methodology of teaching Hebrew to children and adults. His visit is sponsored by the Keren Hatar-but and the Zionist Organization of B.C. The forthcoming visit of such a distinguished guest has engendered considerable excit-ment in the city and it is hoped tl^at it :will}: be possible. to arrange an open communal meeting during Mr. Rosenne's visit at which the entire com-muitv will be able to hear this noted lecturer and top educator give a model lesson in his famous Ulpan method of teaching, Mr. Rosenne's method of teaching Hebrew to adults is used here only at the Keren Hatarbut classes which .are offered by the Vancouver tJlpah Institute. Classes this season will be held as part of the New Centre program, conmiencing in November, and were previously inaugurated and conducted for two years at the Talmud Torah. Since Mr. Rosenne's visit will constitute an invaluable refresher course and aid to Ulpan Institute teachers here, the classes this season are expected to be without parallel in ';erms of the newest methods and approaches to Hebrew. It is anticipated that communal 'nterest will accordingly reach ^ new high in participation in his stimulating and pleasurable nanner of learning Hebrew. Mr. Rosenne,, who is presently on a short-term mission o the Department of Education ind Culture of the United States Tewish Agency, was first invited to Canada in 1957 to guide •^^he Keren Hatarbut in the in-';roduction of the Ulpanim methods in Canada. Under his direction and guidance, a veritable "revolution" took place in the nriethods of teaching Hebrew to adults. Sthara Tiedetk school appaints new orh Arrangements have now been completed for the new school year of Schara Tzedeck Religious school, with classes to begin this Sunday, Sept 16. A new principal, Rabbi Marvin Hier of New York City, has been appointed by the Congregation to serve as principal of the school and director of Religious education and Youth work. Rosenberg Rabbi Bernard Goldenberg A limited number of seats for the High Holy Days Available to the General Public On Sale at the Follov/ing times only for Non-members of the Synagogue Wednesday, Sept. 19 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23 10 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday, Sept. 26, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Schara Tzedeck Religious school curriculum is built around the following subject areas: Hebrew reading and writing, language, Bible studies, Israel, history, customs and ceremonies, current events, arts and crafts, dramatics and dancing, are all an integral part of the school curriculum and aid in the learning process. Permeating the curriculum is the desire to build intelligent and loyal Jews by inculcating in the child favorable attitudes and approaches for positive Jewish living. There are also special training courses preparing boys for Bar- Mitzvah and girls for the Bas Torah ceremonies. There are now six classes operating at the Schara Tzedeck in addition to one kindergarten group, as well as a Junior High school departi;nent known as "Medrasha", for students of post Bar-Mitzvah age, which last term had two separate classes. Registration for the kindergarten group, which meets only on Sundays, is limited to children in the 5 to 7 age group. However, children above the age of 6 may also register for the first grade, which meets three times a week. For the New Year, the Schara Tzedeck Religious school, which will be under the supervision of Rabbi B. Goldenberg, will have a newly-staffed teaching faculty, all experienced teachers and graduates of recognized schools. The following personnel will be in charge of the teaching program: Rabbi Marvin Hier, Mrs M. Hier, Mrs. Ben Ron, (who has recently arrived from Edmonton), and Miss Rochelle Margolis. Mr. p. Weinstein is chairman of the school and co-chairman is Mr. J. Youngson. Committee includes: L. Curtis, Prof. M. Steinberg, G. Slutsky, A. Haro-witz and M. Batist. Men's Club The Beth Israel Men's club will hold their ooening dinner meeting in the Maccabee room, Beth Israel synagogue, on Wednesday, September 19. Schloss, president of Schara Tzedeck synagogue, has announced that Rabbi Marvin Hier, of New York, has been engaged to conduct the High Holy Day auxiliary services in the synagogue auditorium. Chapter 77 sends Centre $500 At a meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 4„ it was voted that No. 77 Chapter, B'nai B'rith Women, forward a contribution of $500.00 on account towards the B'nai B'rith Family's pledge to the New Jewish Community Centre building. Mrs. H. Yacht, chairman of B'nai B'rith Children's Home in Israel reported that her sister, Mrs. Hilda Brown from Los Angeles, who was visiting Vancouver, had made a contribution to this Chapter of $20.00 for this project. Congratulations were also extended to Mrs. Faye Golden, the recipient of the National Hillel Gold Key Award at the recent Grand Lodge Convention held in July in Los Angeles. his wife, who was a former teacher at the Jewish Centre of Clifton, New Jersey, will also take up teaching duties in the synagogue's school. Rabbi Hier was formerly assistant principal of the Coney Island Jewish centre and has youth work experience with the Young Israel of Manhattan and tae Coney Island Youth centre.
