WALTHAM, Mass. — A Bran-ieis  University  professor has imaxed   17   years' research ith a two-stage archeologicail iscovery he terms "more important to historians than the ad Sea Scrolls." Prof. Cyrus H. Gordon, who ttracted worldwide attention in 957   when  he identified the nguage of the Minoan Linear . inscriptions of ancient Crete Semitic, has how conclusively monstrated that the language Phoenician, a tongue of the est Semitic family. other: decipherment of Eteo-cretan, the so-called "mystery" language of the Minoans, written about a thousand years after Linear A and long recognized as the pre-Greek speech of Crete. Prof. Gordon, chiiirman of BrandeisV Dept. of Mediterranean Studies, has found that Eteocretan, which many scholars had previously considered undecipherable, is also Phoenician, though written in the Greek alphabet.
The  essential   meaning of these discoveries, according to Prof. Gordon,   is that Phoenicians were living and writing on Crete before the Greeks invaded, and that Greek and Hebrew cultures sprang from a common Semitic heritage that spanned-■|;he entire East Mediterranean from Greece to Palestine in Minoan times. Prof, Gordon, who   kicked   up   a scholarly hornets' nest when he advanced this theory in "Homer and the Bible," a monograph published in 1955, states that the.nevv con-firmatioii of his long-held hypothesis   will  put   Biblical and Classical studies on a new footing.
