But we do know that it was a signal honor that was bestowed upon our own Myer Wine when the Hebrew U. in Jerusalem made him an F.H.U. (Fellow of the Hebrew University). Only other Canadian ever to have been so honored was the late Mrs. Lau-terman of Montreal. And the rarity can be envisaged when it is realized that one of the few Americans to have received the honor was the late Eleanor Roosevelt. Y i s h a r Kochacha, Myer! * * * While at this writing we don't know yet if space this week is going to permit running cover- Notebook This is the time when temptation is greatest to look into the crystal ball for clues about the New Year ahead. But one does not need to be too much of an expert to predict that National Council of Jewish Women, Vancouver Section's Fourth Angels* Ball—"Le Bal Masque"—scheduled March 4, will be another smash! Pardon the horn blowing! But all the Angels who have attended this gala dinner dance join the horn blowing as they praise the decor, music, favors and yes (despite chronic gripers), the entertainment, food and service. What really gets the biggest rave of all is the friendly, warm-hearted spirit that pervades throughout the evening of fun! Mrs. L. Segal, Chairman of the decor committee, reports that the most exciting decorating arrangements are being planned. "Gorgeous" is the word leaking out from the lucky few who have previewed some of the life-size decorations. "Fabulous" is the word from the arrangements committee, about the all-iiew B.C. Room at Vancouver Hilton. The Angels' Ball is the first affair being held in this ballroom. The management of the Hotel has promised full co-operation to make this an outstanding event. Mrs. C. Diamond and Mrs. R. Raphael, in charge of dinner arrangements, are do- age of two recent conventions involving our youth (alas, only enough advertising for eight pages!), the two yoimgsters who did the reporting for us deserve commendation . . . Leonard Lif-chus turned in a top-notch job for BBYO Seattle convention, a factual, brief news report that was professionally handled . . . For Young Judaea Western Region confab held here last month, Jerry Wosk, presented detailed coverage that captured the "ruach" (spirit) of the event. Michener's "The Source''^ with 1,088 pages, is now available in paperback. As a hardcover book it sold 650,000 copies, appeared for 73 weeks on the New York Times best seller list and was a Book-ofrthe-Month club selection. Fawcett Crest paid a guaranteed advance royalty of $700,-000 for its paperback rights, the largest sum yet advanced for a fiction title. First paperback printing: 1,250,000 copies. "Glamorous and exciting"—but Mrs. S. Gould, chairman of Angels' Ball, has cautioned that some secrets must be kept until March 4. "Terrific" is the word used by Mrs. Helen Dobbs, credits chairman, in commenting on widespread interest in the Ball. She pointed out that deadline for credits on merchandise has been extended to Jan. 21.. "Membership in Coimcil, along with necessary credits, are requisites for attendance to the Ball," she noted, adding, "We are now compiling a list of those who are very close to the $100 credit mark (for couples) and to the $50 mark (single) and I would appreciate hearing from them as soon as possible before the deadline! Call RE 3-7928." Mrs. M. Huberman, head of the busy pricing committee, has urged that remittance of merchandise be accelerated in order to meet deadline date. "Merchandise is given the best prices and therefore the best credits," she said. Depots are: Thrift Shop, 1426 Commercial drive; Mrs. M. Brown, 2145 S.W. Marine drive; Mrs. M. Huberman, 17^6 W. 13th Ave. As well as attendance through accumulation of credits, Council members and interested persons in the community may attend the Ball as Patrons by contributing $100. In this manner, through each Angels' Ball and subsequently by means of the Thrift Shop, Vancouver Section ig enabled to fulfill its promise to expand its many services to the Community. Returning to the crystal ball— it is safe to predict that following the Fourth Angels' Ball, all those who attend will join the horn blowing! B.A. J. B.
