SULAMITH KEPT reassuring me that Canada was acting like a good friend and that everything possible was being done to avert the war threatened by the Arabs. We all know now that "friendliness" and "good intentions" are splendid but that, by themselves, they do not turn aside bombs and artillery barrages. It is a tribute to such scholarly people as President Shazar and Mrs. Nardi that, in spite of the harassments of their daily lives, they were indeed willing and able to devote the necessary thought to the production of such an enjoyable and exquisite  volume  as "Morning Stars".

"Morning Stars" is not a formal, chronologically arrainged autobiography, but rather a series of heart-warming vignettes, bearing such titles as "Steibtz, My Town", "Whooping Cough"; "Fathers Library"; "My First Conference"; "The Maggid of Minsk"; "Baron Ginsburg's Academy", and so on.

The book has been sufficiently popular in Israel to warrant a seventh edition and now we have the English edition, translated by Sulamith Schwartz Nardi in Jerusalem.
The English is poetic and sensitive and, I am told, is very much in the literary spirit of the Hebrew original. Except for the presence of many untranslated Hebrew expressions (the book would be well served with a glossary for these words), one never gets the feeling that it is in fact a translation.
THE "MORNING STARS" are the tender, glowing memories from the morning of life which have served the writer as "warning and consolation and guidance during these many trying and difficult years whenever the winds of contenticoi and misunderstanding began to blow".
Zalman Shazar spent only eleven years in the little White Russian 'shtetl* of Steibtz, from the age of three until 14, and yet the education he received there and his experience with his teachers,  family  and companions
