They say that if you remember the '60s you weren't really there. Well, the community will have an opportunity to remember this wild and crazy decade at a 1960s party - Let it Be... JCC - that will pay tribute to Zev Shafhm. This year's Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver gala honors Shafran for, among other attributes, his warmth, iiitcUigence, generosity and sense of humor. His philanthropic contributions and ongoing commitment to the community have made him a friend and mentor to many Vancouverites. He joined the JCC's board of directors in 1997, and became president in 2001. For Zev Shafran six years, his efforts and determination led to improvements at the JCC. The centre underwent many physical changes, including the development of a new sports complex, fitness centre, gymnasium, pro-shop and newly renovated auditoriiun. Under his leadership, the JCC reinforced its kashrut policy. To further enhance food services, Shafran, together with his wdfe, Elaine, and his sister, Anita, provided the funding to renovate the JCC kosher kitchen. This renewed space will be named the Dave Shafran Kitchen in memory of their father. Zev Shafhm continues to sit on the board of directors and has recently agreed to join the centre's board of governors. Gala co-chair Melanie Samuels said the event will attract more than 600 people "who know how to celebrate life, and at the same time will be raising fimds for the centre's seniors, people vnth special needs and children's programs." Guests vrill groove to 1960s tunes performed by musicians such as Jim Byrnes, sip 1960s-inspired cocktails, relax on mod furniture and eiyoy some great food. There vnll be live and silent auctions, with items including everything from clothing and jewehy to art and electronics to trips to San Francisco and London. Dr. Amal Khovuy, an Arab Israeli orthopedic trauma svugeon with the Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem will be coming to speak in Vancouver. The front-line Israeli trauma surgeon is being presented by the Vancouver council of Hadassah-WIZO Thursday, June 10, at the group's closing event. The Hadassah Medical Centre was recently profiled on the CBS show 60 Minutes, where it was portrayed as "an island of sanity amongst madness." This is 35-year-old Khoury's world. It is here where he has extracted too many screws, bolts and nuts from patients of all ages. No distinction is made between Israelis and Palestinians, and Arabs and Jews often share rooms. Khouiy and his family will be residing in Toronto, where he is currently on an exchange program with Toronto's Simnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, until next year. In addition to Khoury, local philantlux)pist and lifetime volunteer Sybil Soskin will be honored by Hadassah-WIZO for her dedication to the organization. Soskin has been a member of Nordau chapter since her arrival in Vancouver from Calgaiy in 1977. The event takes place at the Westin Bayshore. It begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $36. There is a wine reception and dessert buffet.
