Newcomers to the Vancouver Jewish community are being invited by Shalom Vancouver to attend a two-hour information session to familiarize them with their new home. The event takes place Wednesday, Aug. 24, 7:30 -9:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Centre. According to organizer Janet Kolof, attendees will receive a general overview of the local Jewish community. The evening will also provide an opportunity for questions and the chance to meet other newcomers in a warm, friendly atmosphere. She's "going to play golf with a vengeance" when her resignation as Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver assistant executive goes into effect. Karp told The Bulletin that after four years on the job, she has accomplished many of her professional goals and wants to "turn the reins over to new blood." Among those completed goals are inclusion of adult programming at the JCC. Karp is also proud of the sold-out Sports Dinner held earlier this year. She hopes it will become an annual event. The golf course will not be the only course on Karp's MONTREAL — Daniel Thursz, B'nai B'rith International honorary executive vice-president and president of the National Council on the Aging, will make the keynote address kicking off the 1994 Global Classroom Conference, which will examine the needs of older adults in educational travel. Light refreshments will be served. The newcomers get-together is a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver. It is co-sponsored by B'nai B'rith Women of B.C.; the National Council of Jewish Women, Vancouver Section, B'nai B'rith Vancouver Lion's Gate Lodge; Seniors Advisory Council of Jewish Federation; and Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. "The program accepts 40 bright, up and coming community leaders and trains them to be even more of an asset to the community," Karp explained. The Winnipeg-born executive was raised in Vancouver. She received an MA in human resources and administration from the University of Calgary. Prior to working for the JCC, she was immediate past president of the Calgary Jewish Centre and an educational consultant to the Calgary Board of Education.
