Page 4 THE FISHERMAN October 12, 1962 US Surveys West Coast For Shrimp The US bureau of commercial fisheries vessel John N. Cobb will spend five weeks off Vancouver Island's west coast outside the three mile limit in a search for "potential commercial shrimp grounds," according to a news release. The area of operation during the cruise which will commence October 15 and continue through November 16 will be from Cape Beale to Cape Cook "in international waters." Method of fishing will be by trawl and records will be kept of the general topography of the ocean bottom and oceanographic and meteorological conditions, the bureau states. The size and sex composition of the shrimp populations will be determined, together with other pertinent information. Seattle Firm Develops New Fish Tagging Devices Magnetic and wire dart tags are being added to the lengthening list of devices for tagging fish. They are the product of Oceanic Instruments of Seattle, which developed the device for detecting radioactively tagged herring used by the US bureau of commercial fisheries in Washington Bay, Alaska, in 1960-61. The magnetic tags will be used by the Caribbean Corporation for tagging turtles. Made of permanently magnetised gold plated cobalt-vanadium alloy, two hundredths of and inch thick and one quarter of an inch square, they will be inserted in the legs of turtle hatchlings with a hypodermic needle and magnetic obturator. When the needle, obturator and tag are inserted, the researcher touches the free end of the obturator with a magnetised ring, repelling the tag and allowing the needle and obturator to be withdrawn. Inserted between the vertical interneural bones, just below the dorsal fin, the tag streams in plane wrh the back of a fish as it swims. Eire Spends On Fisheries Eire intends to spend some $4 million over the next five years to modernise its fishing industry in a major bid to expand export markets. Five fishing ports will be provided with modern harbors, freezing and filleting plants and other facilities, according to Brian Leni-han, parliamentary secretary to the minister of lands. First port to be modernised will be Killeybegs, salmon and pilchard fishing village on Donegal Bay on the northwest coast. Other ports selected for development are Gal-way, Castletownbere, Passage East and Howth. Under new legislation, fishermen can now obtain loans equal to 25 percent of the cost of a new vessel repayable over a maximum 15 year period at four percent. If the loan is repaid over a shorter period, up to 10 percent of the initial cost is refundable. Down payment on a new vessel may be as low as five percent of the cost. Loans are also available for purchase of older vessels, at the same interest rate but with a 10 percent down payment required. A fishermen's training program includes an allowance of $15 a week for 16 year old youths over a maximum period of two years while they receive their training on approved fishing vessels. Man Saved; Boat Sinks John Jacobson, 60 year old member of the Campbell River and District UFAWU Local, was rescued from his burning gillnetter on October 6 by another Local member, Hedley Murray, who turned back when he saw the smoke. Jacobson's 34 foot gillnetter Glacier was set on fire by_ an engine explosion in Johnstone*Strait. Jacobson, who had no skiff, fought the fire until the flames neared the gas tanks. Then, he said, "I put on a lifejacket and went over the side." Shortly afterward, a second explosion from the gas tanks rocked the boat. Murray, who had been travelling a mile ahead of Jacobson in his gillnetter Doris 2, turned back when he saw the smoke from the Glacier. He found Jacobson clinging to the side of his boat, already numb from cold after close to half an hour in the water. Jacobson was treated for shock in hospital at Campbell River and later released. His boat was reported to have sunk after burning to the waterline.
