Sees editorial, page 4. - byMJ.NURENBERGER BERNSTeFn'S FOLLY To some Beautiful People in our Jewish society in North America the Black Panther movement is a childrens' game. It may even become fashionable to have a Panther entertain guests at a bar mitzvah party, if the Goldbergs are now to emulate the Bemsteins. It may become mod and the in-thing. just as much as bell bottoms and beatnik beards. * :^ % 4: 4t # If this new fashion comes to pass. Felicia^ Bernstein, an attractive Jewish woman from South .America, and wife of conductor Leonard Bernstein, will go down in history as the style setter of this new era. * « « « « 4: I don't know what Leonard Bernstein thinks a-bout it. I do not believe he has read the Panthers' statements about Israel, about "Zionists", and especially Eldridge Cleaver's most recent ignoble attack against Jews when he was the guest of Boumedienne in Algiers. * * » * * * ^ I doubt it very much whether Leonard knows all this. For, despite his fame and his constant living with art, he has never lost touch with the Jewish community and certainly he cannot be considered one of the Jewish masoehists who are looking for relief from a de Sade among the blacks. :« * 4^ *. * * I knew Leonard Bernstein's father very well. He was a very devout Jew, a man of culture, and considered himself to the last day of his very decent life, as a Gerer hasid. I remember talking to him in his office off State street in downtown Boston about his son, the genius, and about his son, the Jew. So when I read in the New York Times the social column about the party for Panther Cox in the Bernstein home, and the fund raising appeal for the Panthers. I wondered what Bernstein senior would have said had he heard about this insult and injury to everything that staiids for American ,tradition-;-and Judaism. Could Bernstein senior ever have dreamed of such . a meetiiig in his son's home? Who are the Panthers ? And who are all these Jews who believe that we have to swallow dirt in order "to pay a debt" to the black community? ' « » 4i * 4< * The black community is a good community, despite all the misrepresentation by agitators supported from Algeria, Moscow and Peking. The average Negro from Grown Heights in Brooklyn or Rocks-bury, Boston certainly is not anti-American in the sense that Cleaver would like him to be. He knows that in spite of certain discriminatory patterns to whichhe still is subjected, the black in North America is freer than any citizen of the so-called people's democracies, the Panthers' ideal. Their paradise is not his; in their paradise there is no freedom and no steak. There is only propaganda and literature about freedom and dAouf food. ' ' The American Negro should be told about the persecution of the blacks in the Sudan, the revolt m Chad and about the inequality among races which every tourist travelling in Asiatic Russia has observed; This racial discrimination which Soviet society has accepted in Uzbekistan does not apply to Cleaver and Cox when-they visit Moscow, but it is the daily . -portion of the non-whites in Soviet Asia; - --- As far as the Jewish community is concerned, no one need, give the Panthers social entree in order to a-pologize for white persecution. In fact, for centuries we have been the white Negroes and most'of us have always felt a kinship for all oppressed; black or yellow or white. From the days of the prophets till the age of all libertarian movements our children have been in the forefront of those fighting for liberty. And the first two white victims in the march to the south were Jewish boys from Brooklyn: Thus we should not assume that we have to accept Panther racialism as a cure for white racialism. : Only recently I read a moving paragraph by James Baldwin, probably the outstanding black writer in America: ,■ "The crisis taking place in the world, and in the^ minds and hearts of black men everywhere, isiiot produced by the star of David, but by the old, rugged Roman cross on which Christendom's most celebrated Jew was murdered. And not by Jews." ' If some blacks doubt my word about our role in ^ the present turmoil the world over, lei them ask the / Biafrans. Let them ask those who supported Nasser's \ allies when they "cleaned" Nigeria "imperialism", W reported in< Pravda. Those exposed to genocide iiv''~ Biafra know who the friend of the black man is. commifs governmenf fo Anfi-ffdfe 6i// Nation moved by denunci^^^^^^ of antisemitism and bp^^^ By the CJN diplomatic editor The Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honorable Pierre Elliot Trudeau, in an address Sunday night to the Jewish community of Montreal, and to Jews of Canada in general, stated that his government is committed to the passage of the so called Anti-Hate Bill. This bill, the Prime Minister said at a dinner meeting of the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamaiion League in Montreal's Hotel Bona-venture, will make the dissemination of hate literature a criminal offense. (The first demand for such legislation against genocide propaganda was made by The Canadian Jewish News in 1960, and was reported in the Montreal Star at that time.) The Prime Minister was given a tremendous ovation by an audience which consisted of some of the most outstanding Jewish citizens of Montreal. This was his first "official" speech to the Jewish community since becoming the head of government. Throughout his address, Mr. Trudeau was very emotional, and stated at one point that he himself is a member of a minority group and therefore understands the feelings of Jews. He also condemned all forms of antisemitism, from hate propaganda to defamation based on race or religion. He then said: "The people of Canada condemn defamation based on race or religion ... as you are doubtless aware, the government has introduced a bill in parliament that will make the dissemination of hate literature a criminal offense. We took this step with determination, although not without regret that it should be necessary in our country. Let this be one more step towards the just society we seek to build." Mr. Trudeau made his speech on the occasion of his receiving the Anti-Defamation League's Family of Man Award. The previous recipient was Emile Cardinal Leger. Mr. Trudeau then proceeded to analyze antisemitism. He said he had noticed "a particular persistence" of this problem which has plagued humanity for two thousand years. Where other minorities have known adversity, the Jews had undergone bloody persecutions which culminated in Hitler's campaign against them. In a direct reference to the Nazis' "final solution." Trudeau declared that this persecution "culminated in a diabolical attempt at genocide by the Nazis." Analyzing other forms of antisemitism the Prime Minister stated: "Even when it stopped short of bloodshed, persecution meant baiting, brutality, callousness, calumny and insults; its victims were prey to fesir and mental torment and lived in a state of siege in which happiness was denied them," The main point in the Prime Minister's monumental address, was his appeal to all minorities, including the Jews, to remain iii Quebec and to resist the harassment and mental anxieties which some Quebeckers are undergoing. To tremendous audience applause Trudeau exclaimed: "... As a member of one' minority to another I say stick with it! " The Prime Minister asked the Jewish community to understand that "unfortunately there are still men who build society on hate and racism" but they r*c not represent the majority of the Canadian people. He corwluded by asking the Jewish community to insist on its rights. "With all your energies and abilities," the Prime Minister insisted, "you (Jews) should play your full part in this society which you have helped to build." The anti-American resolution adopted by Egypt, . Syria; the Sudan, Jordan and Iraq, and the "absent" presence of Libya, is nothing but propaganda according to diplomats. The statement made by the Prime Minister of Morocco against American arms for Israel during the visit of Secretary of State William Rogers in Rabbat, on Monday is also in the same category. There vnll be no Russian direct action say diplomats, I Y because Moscow is now ser^ iously considering the possibility of war with China. According to well informed West German sources the present Moscow effort to aclueve a modus viyendi with Bonn, is a part of a strategy to secure the back of the Soviet Union against attack, in case of a war with China. * Well informed sources in Washington also say that President Nixon's open support of the defense of Israel is motivated by a lack of fear of direct Soviet intervention. The U.S.-Chinese talks in Warsaw are perturbing the Soviet Union much more than the presence of the Americans in the Middle East. Also, it is reported that the Soviet Union ncv/ welcomes strict adherence to the cease fire agreement between the belligerents in the Middle East. This is the way Washington sees the present Soviet policy: It is still the ho war no peace attitude because peace would ihean the elimination of Soviet influence in that part of the world. Direct intervention would mean confronting the United States, which admits that she heeds Israel as a solid partner in guarding the roads to Asia and Africa. * This situation is also behind the intransigent position of Golda Meir, the Prime Minister of Israel, who told the New York Times that Jerusalem will not con- sider anything but direct talks between the parties involved in the conflict. * The Prime Minister received strong support for her position recently when the United States' largest newspaper, the New York Daily Nevvs said: "Instead of trying second-hand blackmail on Israel's friends, Kosygin ought to work on his own stooges. There is only one way to prevent a new heat-up of the conflict, and that is serious face to face bar- '^^ gaining between the nations directly involved." * Moshe Dayan told students at the Beersheva University last weekend that this month, will decide whether there vrill be outright war in the Middle East. A sensational document signed by the present French Mirtister of National Defense, Maurice Debre, reportedly the highest French official responsible for the Mirage deal with Libya, appears this week in the March issue of Nouveau Monde. Nouveau Monde, which is published by the editors of The Canadian Jewish News is a non-sectarian, non-partisan French language journal. Its purpose is to open a dialogue between the non-French and non-English communities and French Canada. Nouveau Monde will now appear once a month, according to M.J. Nurenberger, editor and publisher of The Canadian Jewish News, and also editor-in-chief of Nouveau Monde. The first eight issues of Nouveau Monde, published on an experimental basis, t^d close to eight thousand pies on newsstands without any advertising or publicity. This has encouraged The Canadian Jewish News to commence r e g u la r monthly publication. In an editorial.Nouveau Monde states that the magazine believes that the time A JCN5 exclusive Greeks reconsider Libyan links Relations between Greece and' Libya, already stramed because of Libyan support for Arab terrorists operating in this countrj', have worsened. To date, ^ Libya has: received 11 F-5s. Her pilots have already crashed three of them. Ten more are^ due, in addition to the more than 100 Mirage : nd other aircraft to be supplied by France. Experts Tierc say that the conversion from F-5 flying to Mirage flying is only a matter of adaptation. Greece is also supplying the Libyans with training in jet maintenance and the operation of small coastal craft. Arabs oiT trials , A Magistrates' ,Council of \ the Criminal Court of Appeal has approved the prosecution of three young Arabs accused of a bid to^ V hijack a Trans World airliner. Nouveau Monde "does not pretend to solve the problems now on the agenda in Quebec. It sees itself as a journal of opinion and debate and will accord freedom of expression to ail who seek equitable solutions . . . Nouveau Monde is convinced that salvation will not come from overseas. It is herein Canada that we must seek and find answers." Concerning Quebec ties with France, Nouveau Monde cautions French Canadians about the illusion of relying upon Paris. Quebec might have to wait another three hundred years, says Nouveau' Monde, if it orientates its policy of economics and cultural revival towards the French government. For Quebec is in North America and its problems must be solved here. The document on relations between France and Israel, signed by Maurice Debre, was obtained by Nouveau Monde from the French Committee of Solidarity with Israel; of which • the present French Minister for National Defense, was a founding member when Jie was a senator, in 1957. Mr. Debre then said: "The State of Israel, born out of revolt and hope, has, through the devotion of its citizens; justified the confi-. dence of those who created It. It is today, almost in spite of itself, in the forefront of the struggle - the eternal struggle for liberty . . . Israel represents an advanced citadel whose peaceful character, whose spirit arid whose youth constitute a living refutation of obscurantism and violence ... Anyone today, who is ready to take a position, based not on sectarianism, or racism but simply on the certainty that liberty is the supreme factor of politics -must understand, and must help others to understand, Israel's testimony. Just imagine for a moment that the plot, which is unceasingly advanced by those in the Arab world who want to renew the Hitlerian spirit, is successful. The result vvpuld be an unprecedented blovv against civilization. The destiny of the Mediterranean, Europe, The West, of Christianity - all these things would be sorely affected not only as far as their interests are concerned but in relation to their ideals and their reasons for existing, living and believing. The battle that is imposed upon Israel, we should all know, is imposed upon all of us and if we want to respond without hatred and with the unique desire of making our adversaries understood what true liberty and-true political grandeur is.we must do it by supporting Israel because in supporting Israel, we will succeed."
