During winter, a particularly popular dish is the traditionar Iraqi Sabbath morning meal: Hamln eggs, with slices of deep-fried^ggplant, eaten with bread _(preferably pitta) and piquant mango chut- ney or pickles. Hamin is Hebrew for a hot dish, and conveys approximately the same idea as cfaolent, i.e. food that is left on the fire oyemight and eaten after moriiing serviceis on The Sabbath. ~ The list of ingredients 1 for this dish may appear somewhat improbable, but be assured that'the combinations of flavors which results, is a taste rapidly acquired. Eggs cooked in this way, have a delicate, huttyl.flavor• They turn an attractive pinky-brown shade, andj^ are very soft-— childreni love them too. Lewis, who was horipr: ed as the eighth annual "Speaker of the Year." declared that anyone who follows the injunctions of the Hebrew prophets and the old Testament "ought to be concerned about those who don't have as much as we do." Speaking without notes, the Polish-born politician, labor lawyer and political science professor, said it worried hihi that so many middle class Canadians, the kind represented at the breakfast, aippeared to resent the social security system to which they contribute by law. Lewis, who presently teaches at Ottawa's Carle-ton University, expressed sorrow that otherwise ' 'decent and compassionate people" resent the social w-elfare system which has been gradually created throughout the years. In remarks concerning the Middle East. Lewis attacked the UN for having admitted the PLO as observers, affirmed that Canada's policy toward Israel has been steadfast in its support of the Jewish state, and suggested that a true peace settlement might be impossible to achieve without the direct participation of the Palestinians. T h e brunt of his speech, however, was . devoted to his reflections on the state of Canada and the West. Lewis, who lost his York South parliamentary seat in the 1974 election, lambasted the United Nations for "playing geopolitics without principle" and for being unable to stop the arms race.
