In an angry denunciation of the press, he added-that pubhcity surrounding the case was detrimentaLto the solidarity of the synagogue and' the image of the Jewish community as a whole. "The press could hardly restrain themselves from: getting in here," he added. "They were drooling at the mouth in preparation for this trial. ■ The allegations and counter-allegations w p u Id provide fascinating and lurid reading. It would put on display the Jewish community in the worst light and in a distorted manner." - Anticipating some backlash, Shibley commented: "If you consider (the publicity) tO: be provocative don't give it any more to feed on. I don't feel any interest will be served by a parade of on Cont'd from Page 1 He scoffed at the notion that , Scranton's speech might foreshadow an .American reversion to the 1969 Rogers Plan under which Israel would vacate most of the occupied lands. "President Ford has said that borders should be freely negotiated," he explained. "The subject of final borders has never been discussed with the U.S." Asked to comment On scattered reports that U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger believed Israe;! had to return to the 1967 lines, Dinitz said: "If Kiissinger thinks so, he's never told us." Dinitz was also asked to reply to current speculav tion that Washington is moving toward some kind of recognition of the PLO, "The U.S. will not recognize nor have any contact with the PLO until it recognizes Israel and agrees to abide by UN resolutions 242 and 338." he said. - Dinitz admitted there were "some genuine problems" between his country and the United States. Yet in spite of American-Israeli divergencies on the disposition of the occupied areas and the status of Israel's settlements on the West Bank, Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsula, there The aimbassador was asked "to confirm reports that Henry Kissinger had withheld vital arms from Israel during the Yom Kippur War. He said Kissinger had done no such thing. "This is where all the writeups are wrong." Speaking of the disturbances which rocked Israeli Arab villages, Dinitz said the upheavals, which claimed six lives, did not represent the national mood. V'The same day of the! riots, 70,000 Arabs crossed the border into Israel to go to their jobs. 95% of Arab children went to school as usual and the majority of Arab businesses opened." . speakers..i Don't use this meeting as a stage, the stakes are too high. Display to the world at large a unity, a beginning to the end of divisiye-ness," The lawyer outlined, in detiail, his rationale for the "fairness" of the final offer. The settlements' benefits, he Explained, included the facts that: an additional $200,000 of unrecoverable legal costs would be avoided — costs that would have been incurred had the action continued; the insurance company had increased its offer to $100,000 from the $35,000 suggested last July; the individual plaintiffs in a suit against the congregation had agreed to pay their costs of $25,000 themselves; all five lawsuits could be resolved within one overall package and a long-term bitter dispute, dragged through the courts 3nd press, could be pirevented. In tabulating the figures behind the settlement, Shibley argued that the rabbi, had he left on good terms, was still entitled $120,000 to cover 17 months of severance pay, six months of sabbatical leave and expenses. U h d e'r the contract terms, reimbursements for contributions to pension, house and expenses amounted to $60,000 a year, or $720,000 over the remaining years until the rabbi's retirement, at 65. In effect, intimating the settlement was a bargain, he argued that the-$225,-000 to be paid out over the 12 years has a present value, in terms of purchasing power, of closer to $130,000. Robinette followed Shibley's address with a short staternent supporting his colleaguie's advice and sentiments. In the question period which lasted less than 10 minutes, one member asked whether the settlement would prevent Rabbi Rosenberg from airing his views in the press or in any future publication or . book, to which Robinette replied "that would be impossible". Another member questioned the role of the Rabbinical Assembly throughout the course of the case and its judgment on Rabbi Benjamin Fried-berg, Congregational Resident Albert Gellinan said the Assembly "was not as helpful as it could have been". Rabbi Fried-berg notified the congregation's lawyer's that his status with the Assembly and his persona! interests were not to be considered at all in drafting the settlement. (The CJN has learned that the Beth Tzedec board of governors has renewed Rabbi Fried-berg's contract for three years and that the United Synagogue of America, the lay body of Conservative synagogues, formally ■ recognized his legitimacy four months ago.) Within a short two hours, a crowd of 1,200 characterized by its decorum and an unforeseen solidarity put to rest a painful chapter in the synagogue's history. Many congregants were visibly relieved and eager to meet Shibley's request for a "unanimous" vote and to relax three-year-old stresses. Ghieken war in Toronto Cont'd from Page 1 respective federal governments. The local fresh .product is not — the government only requiring mandatory inspection for poultry which crosses provincial and U.S. lin^s. Congress sources say the expense of building a plant which would meet government requirements,* here, would be prohibitive. According to Rabbi Felder." hygiene is a government matter; kashruth: is Congress' concern." The problem over the local shchita industry is a longstanding one. Montreal poultry has been imported to this city for several years. A spokesman at Baycrest Geriatric Centre confirmed the institution has favored the Montreal product over the local one for many years, but refused to offer an explanation as to why the Toronto kosher poultry was unacceptable. According to several sources within the CJC, Congress had offered the Toronto shochtim the opportunity of banding together, union-style. pooling all their earnings, and receiving Congress subsidization. The plan, formulated by the late Meyer W. Gasner. former , chairman of the Orthodox Division, fell through because of lack of support from the shochtim themselves, the sources claim. Now the shochtirn are turning to Congress for support. They fear their industry is in jeopardy. Abraham Peri, a 70-year-old Roumanian shochet who has been plying his trade in Kensington since he arrived in Canada in 1951. remembers when there were close to 30 shochtim slaughtering poultrv' in this city just two decades ago. Those who couldn't make a living in the industrj- have turned to other jobs. "If it keeps going like now," he says, "in two years they c 0 u Id close all the slaughterhouses." MARVELLOUS MARVIN . .
