Stephen Lewis, spoke at a United Jewish Appeal breakfast meeting last week. Followinc a warm introduction by Eddie Goodman. UJA Major Gifts chairman. Lewis was lavish in his praise of Premier William Davis and Attorney General Roy McMurtr>- regarding their public and private concern for Israel's welfare. ■'We in Ontario are most fortunate to have this remarkably valuable dimension in our government leaders." he said. "Their statements have been spontaneous, eloquent, unswerving and quite moving. I feel apolitical and terribly good about it." , This was something which he had never felt in the federal government. Lewis told the meeting. The NDP leader said his Jewish roots stemmed from a long family association with the Workmen's Circle. He admitted that until his marriage to "a strong Zionist" who took part in the 1956 Sinai campaign, he had no particular leaning toward Zionism. His wife has influenced his thinking in that direction. Lewis expressed some anxiety about President Carter and the U.S. position on Israel. "I hope I am wrong, but fundamentalists make me uneasv." he said. Touching briefly on the United Nations. Lewis spoke of his "despair with the wantonly anti-social attitude to Israel" now prevalent in the world body. He recalled a time, not too long ago, when as a teacher in Ghana and Nigeria, he lived side by side with Israelis who were welcomed as technicians and advisers in the newly-developing .African countries. Now. he said, all that had been turned around. Lewis also threw a few darts at the radical left, who had no understanding of what had really happened in 1948 when the Jewish homeland was established. He warned his audience that from the Soviet Union to France, "the anti-Semitism that lurks underneath the surface is diabolical. The only thing to rely on is Jew helping Jew." i B> SHELDON KIRSHNER TORONTO — Henry Cohen-Sitta-^oun. executive director of —of the Labor Zionist Alliance. Toronto District, has — charged that the new Central Region head of the Canadian Zionist Federation was hired without the knowledge or approval of the CZF's executive committee. "I cannot understand the mentality of three...of our Toronto Zionist leaders who took it upon themselves, without authority whatsoever, to hire this man." he wrote in an indignant letter submitted to The Canadian Jewish News. "Sooner or later, it will backfire one way or another." Complaining that the CZF's executive directorship had not been advertised, the aggrieved Co-hcn-Sittayoun said Eliot Sargon. the 27-year-old American successor to Bill Stern, had been hired unilaterally by Max Shec-ter, president. Central Region; Phil Givens. national president, and Dr. Leon Kronitz. executive vice-president. Cohen-Sittayoun. who feels he was eminently suitable for the recently vacated post, added: "In my opinion, the ones involved in the hiring should render an accounting for their unjustified actions, which altogether do not behoove them and are gross insults to. the integrity of the local people in the profession, and jmininmiunmniniininiraunnniiuimnniuraDUiuinnuniiinnimiiinmminnnini^ Eliav to address Histadrut TORONTO — The 10th anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification will be celebrated at the annual banquet of the Israel Histadrut campaign. Save electricity, savemoney. There are two ways saving electricity can save money. First, the obvious one. The less you use, the less you have to pay for And today, electricity is simply too valuable to waste. Second, something not SO obvious. Ontario uses more arid more power every year. This means an ever increasing investment in plant and equipment...and their cost> is rising tidpidly The cost of fuels is also increasing rapidly. These costs inevitably show up in the price you pay for electricity. You can help to slow dowri the growing demand by using electricity wisely. Dont waste it. Members of the executive committee approached by The Canadian Jewish News said they had not been consulted by any of the CZF leaders. And Max Goody, who headed the special hiring committee established after Stern announced he was leaving, said; "I wouldn't know Sargon if I tripped over him!" Deputy president of the Zionist Organization of Canada. Goody said he disagreed with the manner in which Sargon — the former vice-president of the Colorado Zionist Federation — was hired. "They bypassed the executive committee." he asserted. In an interview, Shecter said he consulted Goody, Givens and Kronitz. He also disclosed that Sargon has not signed his contract to date. "I intend to get the approval of the executive committee as soon as possible. It's highly improbable that the. committee will not approve of the choice." Shecter would not comment on whether he should have consulted the entire executive committee, saying the matter would be discussed this week at an executive committee meeting. Responding to Cohen-Sittayoun's letter, Givens repeated Shecter's explanation that Goody and Kronitz had been consulted. "I consider the hiring procedure completely kosher; we don't require approval by the entire executive committee. We hired Bill Stern the same way. Don't try to make a whole story out of it; there's no story." Givens said he had no idea how many members of the executive committee knew that Sargon had been taken on to head the CZF. He said nine or 10 candidates — including Cohen-Sittayoun — had been interviewed, and Sargon was chosen "because we thought he was satisfactory...he has the potential for training...we wanted someone we could mould, into the job." Givens said Cohen-Sittayoun did not stand a good chance of getting the job because the CZF would have found it ex- Correction In our March 11 edition, the United Jewish Appeal press release incorrectly stated that the UJA Runa-thon would take place on May 28. He said the position had been advertised, but stated he could not recall where the ads appeared. Goody said it was a tactical error on Cohen-Sittayoun's part to take the matter to the press — a view echoed by one member of-the executive committee who consented to be interviewed. Lewis J. Moses said. "If Cohen-Sittayoun squawked to vou, he's out of place. He had no right to discuss it with you. There'll be^a board meeting on the subject." Asked if he had known Sargon was the leading candidate, he replied: "I heard Max (Shecter) was-going to interview someone — and I gave him my blessings." Saul Sigler. another member of the executive committee, said: "1 would imagine the entire executive committee should have been consulted....! don't like it." A third member, who prefered to remain anonymous, noted: "I found out by chance about Sargon only after he was hired. I suppose the usual procedure is to take a candidate's name to the executive committee. When such an important decision is made, you wanF to get as many people as possible involved. They should have brought the matter before the executive committee."
