He portrays Le Carre's "balanced" objectivity by contrasting his seemingly innocent PLO sympathies with his token "praise of Israel." Yet he ignores the underlying venom that characterizes Le Carre's description of Jews, Is- raelis and Zionist history.', , Baskin thus encourages what must be termed the worst in Arab propaganda and lends authority to the demon-ological image it fosters. _ David W. Wdnberg Toronto Criticizes Congress I find the attitude of the Canadian Je^y ish Congress deplorable when it comes to relations with the PQ government. As representative of this JeWish community, the CJC should be the leader in signaling to this government that Quebec Jews are not willing to live with the excesses of Bill 101, are staunch believers in freedom, and the belief that individual rights are sacred to our community. Instead, we find the CJC sponsoring a uni-1 i ii g u a 1 F r e n c h - 0 n 1 y meeting at the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, thie purpose of which wasL to compare francization in Quebec with "heb-taizatioh'' in Israel .A PQ fohctibnnaire, Pieri-e Laporte, was the guest ispeaker. This meeting was distasteful fronj a number of points of view. Although dialogue Svith the PQ is desirable, we should never bend to their conditions that it must be in French-only. By sponsoring this meeting, the CJC legitimized the acceptance of unilin-gualism for Quebec. The people the CJC is supposed to represent By JAMES MONTAGNES PARIS — For the second time in recent mbntlis France will issue a stamp honoring one of its Jewish citizens. On June 27 a commemorative will appear for Nobel Peace Prize awardee of 1968, Rene Samuel Cassin. He drew up the agreement between Wfaiston Churchill and Charleis de Gaulle in 1940 establishhig the Free French Forces in 1940, and was the commissioner of justice and education in the Free French government at London. Rene Cassin was closely related with the French Jewish community. When the Jewish representation at the Petain Vichy regime under the German occupation ceased to func- tion, he was appointed in 1943 by de Gaulle to take over direction of Jewish affairs in France as best he could from the government-in-exile in London. After the liberation of France in 1945 Cassin became president of the Alliance Israelite Uni-verselle and helped in the rehabilitation of French Jewry throughout the then French empire and Israel. Rene Cassin was born in 1887 at Bayonne and graduated in law iii 1909 in Paris. He began an academic career, served during the First World War with the French army, was wounded, received France's highest decorations for bravery. After the war he taught at universities in Lille and Paris, as well as at the International Law Academy at The Hague in Holland, and later in Geneva, Switzerland. Cassin served on numerous committees of the League of Nations and its successor the United Nations. He helped draw up the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and was awarded a United Nations prize in the sphere of human rights. After World War II he served on many international commissions on international law and diplomatic developments, and was awarded honors by numerous governments. The stamp to Rene Cassin was issued as one of a series to famous French personalities, a continuing theme for postal issues by the French post office. reject this concept in total. Thousands of our yOung people are leaving this province because of theeffectsof Bill 101. It's the duty of CJC to represent the legitimate ^concerns of Quebec Jews in this matter. HaroldBeU Montrieal ■ I. Grateful Booker As a member of the group involved in the Talking Books Project, I should like to thank you for the May 5 in-depth coverage by Cynthia Gasner. Although we have informed the arms of the Canadian Jewish Congress of this work, your article has really made an impression on the Jewish community, judging from the response we have had since the paper came out. Not only have many called to commend lis for the work being done, but also many have offered their assistance as volunteers. Norma Rubin Toronto * * * Happy detective I would like to thank you for Frank Rasky's highly professional April 28 article on my detective work and unique "gumshoe school," the Canadian School of Private Investigation &. Security. If I can be of any assistance to you or Mr. Rasky on a private or business basis, please do not hesitate to call on me. . ;■■ Carl Franco Toronto Sad volunteer We were surprised when The Canadian Jewish News failed to acknowledge volunteers publicly during National Volunteer Week April 25-29. Most new pape rs, English and French, included an article saluting these wonderful people. JThe Canadian Jewish News, being the yoice of the organized Jewish community, has been remiss, A public statement reiterating the Jewish concept of tzedakah would be most welcome. Suzanne Herscovitch Montreal Editor's note: The CJN gives foil coverage to the work of volunteers every week of the year, liierefore, we see no heed to acknowledge what they do on one particular week. We tip our hat to these wonderful people anyway. Irate Rose champion Would you be good enough to print this letter disassociating myself with your edited version of my letter to the editor concerning MP Fred Rose. At no instance did I refer to yoUr March 24th obituary labeling Rose a convicted spy. My main point was that Fred Rose appeared to have been framed by Hitler's backers who required a post-war red herring to divest attention from their participation in the murder of untold millions. You omitted this item completely. Nathan Gans Montreal ^ Tip of iceberg Re Rabbi Moses Burak's column (CJN, April 28): The rabbi responded to a question: Why didn't the Jews put up a resistance against the Nazis? The rabbi's explanation was just a tip of the iceberg. That posed question is a product of ignorance, lack of knowledge of the circumstances, atmosphere and attitude of the Gentile neighbors. It is a duty of our spiritual leaders and penmen to educate our people about this subject; to blemish our martyrs is a real sin. Millions of Russian prisoners-of-war died of starvation, cold, and disease,- these being trained, healthy military men. I survived a ghetto, two concentration camps, partisans and the army.
