FISH PRICES
Consumer Price Index Reaches Record High
Prices of food, housing, clothing, transportation and health care all moved up in June as the consumer index hit a record 154.7, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported this week.
Consumer prices for fish, poultry and meat all rose during the month and the overall food price index reached 149.4, up from 148.9 in May and 144.8 at the same time last year. The index is based on a 1949 level of 100.
Higher rents in major centres caused the housing index to increase from 157.1 in May to 157.6 and there were major increases in most clothing and shoe prices and in certain bus and train fares.
Costs of housing and housing operation make up 32 percent of the total index, food prices comprise 28 percent, transportation 12 percent, clothing 11 percent, health and personal care seven percent, tobacco and alcohol six percent and recreation and reading five percent.

Veteran Seine Skipper
Industry Mourns Norm Gunderson
Funeral services were held this week at New Westminster for one of the fishing industry's best- known and respected seine skippers, Norman Peter Gunderson, who died at Vancouver General Hospital on July 5 from complications which set in following routine surgery.
Born in New Westminster on January 24, 1902, the veteran fisherman had worked in the industry since 1918 and will be remembered widely as a prime mover behind the annual CKNW Orphans' Fund herring sales which he helped to initiate several years ago.
He had fished for Nelson Bros, nearly all his working life and was last out as skipper on the Western Ocean before retiring in 1958. Before that he seined with his own boats, the 71 foot Western Ranger, which he built in 1938, and the 81 foot former naval vessel Western Crusader which he purchased after the Second World War.
Earlier, he had fished with a number of vessels including the Norma G, Port Essington and Exilda.
Surviving members of his family include his wife, Hulda, in New Westminster; two daughters, Mrs. Norma Matheson in Coquit-lam and Mrs. Betty Banfield in New Westminster; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Christine Iverson in Delta and two brothers, George and Gustav Gunderson, both longtime UFAWU fishermen, also of Delta. Son-in-law Reg Banfield is a UFAWU halibut fisherman currently engineer on the Western Girl.

California Meal Production Down
The California anchovy reduction fishery which ended on May 15 brought a total catch of 6,505 tons for the 1987-68 season, less than 10 percent of the 75,000 ton quota.
Decreased fishing effort reportedly was responsible for the sharp decline from the previous season's total of 37,530 tons. Bulk of this season's landings, 5,648 tons, came from the area north of Point Conception.
