542 Names on First UFAWU List
Small Boats Cleared for Salmon
The United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union this week issued its first list of 542 small boats cleared for salmon, at the same time reiterating its appeal to all Union fishermen to ensure that all names, and vessel names in particular, are spelled correctly by Union representatives issuing clearances.
As it did last year, the Union pointed out that "the list is carefully prepared and checked against records to ensure accuracy, but misspelling of boat names frequently makes for errors."
All Union fishermen are asked to notify the Union of errors in the list below, whether of commission or omission.

Joint Enterprises Increase in Alaska
Several U.S. fishery firms in the Kodiak area are reported to have entered into business arrangements, including creation of jointly owned enterprises, with foreign fishing concerns.
One of the American companies, B and B Fisheries Inc., is said to have received strong financial backing from Taiyo Fishing Company of Japan, world's largest fishing firm, and South Korean interests, according to the Kodiak Daily Mirror, are "actively seeking similar arrangements and . . . undoubtedly will find a domestic firm willing to participate with them in the North Pacific fishing industry."
The Soviet Union also is believed to be establishing direct relationships with a firm in the Kodiak area following takeover of Wakefield Fisheries by a New York company which has dealt with the Soviet fishing industry in the past.
Some of those dealings, involving American imports of Soviet king crab and other sea foods,

caused a furore in U.S. industry circles in 1965, the Mirror noted, but the recent announcement that the Soviets now are "rather firmly wedded corporately with a Kodiak based domestic firm by the merger through a larger parent firm has raised little—except perhaps a few eyebrows among industry executives."
Kodiak's role as fisheries center of the North Pacific was recognized last year, the newspaper said, when Japan's five major fishing firms and the Japanese Fisheries Agency specified the Alaska port as a logical location for an ocean fisheries research center.
Kodiak also has been chosen by the U.S. commercial fisheries bureau as the "natural" site for its $26.5 million Alaska North Pacific Fisheries Institute program.
