Aftermath of 'Aleutian Queen' Sinking
Gronlund Kin Get $29,500 Award
Damages of $29,500 were awarded in B.C. Supreme Court this week to the widow and three children of Odd Gronlund, who drowned in 1965 after the dragger Aleutian Queen sank off northern Vancouver Island.
The award was made against owner-skipper Oisten Hansen who reportedly conceded negligence on his part in a collision between the 68.foot Aleutian Queen and the Soviet trawler Mexahnk which led to the sinking.
The collision took place 21 miles due west of Mexicana Point at approximately 8 a.m. on November 10, 1965, with the Aleutian Queen going down two hours later while trying to make Bull Harbor. UNDER TOW
The federal transport department found that the Soviet deep-sea tug Bresstrashny, which was towing the disabled Mexahnk, had the right of way when the collision took place.
Aboard the Aleutian Queen
were Hansen, Gronlund and Hansen's son, Robert. A fourth crew

member, Charles Bunn, had been injured and put ashore the previous day.
Shortly before the dragger sank the liferaft was launched but it inflated upside down and became entangled in the rigging as the Aleutian Queen lay over on her side. In attempting to right the raft, Gronlund was trapped underneath and could not be pulled aboard.
His body was found under the raft when the Western Maid came on the scene soon afterward.
In awarding damages, Mr. Justice Kirke Smith said that Hansen bore responsibility for events occurring after the collision. The sinking was a foreseeable consequence of the collision and resultant damage suffered by the Aleutian Queen, the court ruled.
