Veikko Tynjala Dies Suddenly at Sointula
The fishing community of Sointula is mourning the sudden death in Vancouver on December 27 of veteran fisherman and UFAWU member Veikko (Vic) Tynjala.
A native son of Sointula, he was born in 1904 to a family which
Neil McPhail Dead at 57
Former UFAWU member and longtime maritime industry worker Neil Angus MacPhail died at Vancouver on December 16 at the age of 57.
Born in Saskatchewan, he went away to sea out of Atlantic coast ports at an early age and with the exception of some years in the army during the Second World War worked as a ship's cook all his life.
A staunch trade unionist, he helped man the picket lines of the old Canadian Seamen's Union in Montreal during the bitter strike of 1949.
He joined the UFAWU in the early fifties, transferring from the West Coast Seamen's Union and sailing on the Melvin E and other salmon packers. For several seasons he was a well known crew member of the Nahmint when she whaled for B.C. Packers out of Quatsino Sound.
More recently he sailed as a member of Seamen's Local 400 of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers.
A simple memorial service was held for the lifelong unionist in Vancouver on December 22, attended by many of his friends from the maritime industry. Surviving members of his family include one son, Angus, in Montreal.
Protests Sink Tax Proposal
A plan to extend property taxes to fishing boats has been scuttled by Petersburg City Council after protests by fishermen.
Councilmen in the Alaskan city rejected a measure that would have scrapped present taxes on boats—$5 for small boats and $15 for larger vessels—and replaced them with a 17 mill property tax.

During his half century in the industry he took an active part k every struggle waged by fishermen for improved working conditions and a better return for thek labor.
A longtime fellow union member at Sointula this week described Vic Tynjala as one who "was never known to waver or lose his principles or faith, even when the going was rough." I
