Poppycock' Remarks Now Haunt Davis
Mercury pollution by industry has compelled the federal government to impose a ban on sale of fish from two Ontario lakes. The move threatens the livelihood of more than 1,000 fishermen and shoreworkers in the province.
All sales of perch and pickerel from Lake Erie were prohibited by the federal fisheries department March 31, one week after a similar ban on all species had been ordered for Lake St. Clair.
Preliminary tests revealed Lake Erie perch and pickerel had a mercury content of up to one part per million, twice the maximum level set under federal standards. Mercury concentrations of seven parts per million, 40 times the level recommended by the World Health Organization, were found in fish from Lake St. Clair.
Three and four man crews of 150 commercial fishing boats operating out of Canadian- ports, in addition to several hundred shore plant employees, could be affected by the Lake Erie ban. Another 40 licensed commercial fishermen are prevented from fishing on Lake St. Clair.
DOW MAIN CULPRIT
Lake Erie commercial fishermen produced about 30 million pounds of perch and one million pounds of pickerel in 1969.
The Ontario provincial government this week belatedly ordered five pulp and paper mills and six chemical plants to stop using and dumping mercury within the next two to four weeks.
(Said the Toronto Globe and Mail of the government move: "One is reminded of the lady who sternly told the burglar he had exactly 24 hours to get out of her bedroom.")
Main offender cited in the Lake St. Clair pollution scandal is Dow Chemical's Sarnia plant which reportedly has been dumping mercury into the St. Clair River for 20 years, despite the existence since 1956 of provincial legislation making water pollution illegal.
DAVIS' 'SUCCESS STORY'
Addressing North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce a few weeks ago, federal fisheries minister Jack Davis cited Lake Erie as "one of the great success stories of our time" in the fight against pollution.
Despite massive pollution of the lake, Davis said, "some species of fish thrive. Our catch of Lake Erie perch, to prove a point, is gong up by leaps and bounds."
In the same speech, the minister criticized "alarmist talk" about pollution. "I don't believe all I read about dying lakes and sickening seas," he said. "Most of it is poppycock."

are being held as political prisoners "under inhuman conditions" at various camps, the convention noted. They include Lalcki on Leros Island where some 1,000 prisoners recently staged a hunger strike to protest the death in the camp of veteran labor leader Nikos Galatis.
The junta represents the "first new beachhead established by fascism in Europe since the defeat of Nazism," George Hewi-son, Prince Rupert, said in debate.
Events in Greece, he said, are not as far removed from this country as might be thought. Without support from the U.S. and, through NATO, from Canada and other countries, the junta wouldn't last a day."
The convention noted that value of U.S. armaments exported to the junta last year totalled some $33.5 million, an increase of 40 percent from 1968.
UFAWU president Homer Stevens referred to the visit to Vancouver last year of veteran Greek union leader Tony Am-batielos who spent 17 years in fascist jails before being released in 1964.
Forced to flee Greece after the military takeover of 1967, Ambatielos had stressed during his visit the importance to the Greek people of support from organized labor in other countries.
"Trade unionists have always recognized that ability of a repressive regime to crush labor in one country constitutes a threat to workers everywhere," Stevens said. "This is particularly true

when, as in Canada's case, a country is linked to a fascist regime through military pacts."
The convention called on the federal government to speak out against the reign of terror is Greece, "do its utmost to isolate the military junta and work for the restoration of democracy in that country."
