• The salmon season was at its height when these pictures were taken in mid-August Among the many visitors aboard the UFAWU organizing boat Chiquita 3 during one of her trips to Namu were (left) Nanaimo Local member Don Ross, his wife Lolly and their three month old son Darren. Nor was Darren Ross the on ly kindergarten candidate to visit the Chiquita. At Alert Bay (centre) two year old Colleen Smith, seen aboard the seiner J.1.4, on which both her parents were working, was proud to display her union button. General organizer Walter Ironside, whose comments on the trip have already appeared in The Fisherman, is seen (right) talking to Malcolm Maitland, Sointula Local secretary.
Soviets Build Aquarium To Study Dolphin Sounds
A dolphinarium, first of its kind in the Soviet Union, is being built at Batumi on the Black Sea.
Objectives for the dolphinarium are to keep dolphins under conditions as close as possible to natural ones, study their behavior, their reactions to various stimuli, and to record and study their voices to determine how they communicate.

The studies are of importance to commercial fishing since many fish are strongly sensitive to sounds emitted by dolphins. Using such sounds, fish could be driven into nets, or once inside could be scared away from the trawl mouth or purse seine opening, improving gear efficiency and increasing catches.
Most important is the study of a sonar organ in dolphins by which they locate their prey. Although the organ is not as sensitive as in seals, which can locate fish at depths to 750 feet, it is likely to have similar wave length.

Air Pollution Speeds Aging
Dr. Ernest Mastromatteo, director of the Ontario health department's environmental health services, believes that air pollution may be speeding up the aging process in human body cells.
He says studies have found that particular air pollutants — ozone and photo-chemical oxidents — set off an aging process in lung cells when they are in direct contact with the lungs.
This, he suggests, may be the reason the life expectancy of middle-aged men as shown by DBS statistics has decreased slightly in recent years.

WhiteAmur Used In Weed Control
The white amur, a fish from the Amur River in Siberia which feeds entirely on aquatic vegetation, is being tested by scientists at the Plantation Field Laboratory at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the hope it can be used to control water hyacinths and other aquatic weeds as it has done in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland and India.

THE FISHERMAN — OCTOBER 23, 1970
Oil Spill Danger Laid To Neglect
Government neglect anc bungling are largely responsible for conditions which already have resulted in oil pollution on the Eas1 coast and which now threaten ever more serious situations, the Canadian Labor Congress charges
CLC president Donald Mac Donald holds that the report of th< federal task force investigating Oh sinking of the oil tanker Arrow constitutes new evidence for the creation of a Canadian merchant marine.
MacDonald's statement followec a discussion by the CLC executive council meeting in Winnipeg.
"For years we have used everj opportunity to impress on th( government the importance having our own merchan marine," MacDonald said. "It i: ridiculous that a trading nation o the stature of Canada should have to rely on ships of other countries often operating under flags oi convenience, to carry our goods
"The task force report has made it abundantly clear that all toe often these are little more thar rusty hulks, without proper equipment and manned by officers and crews lacking in experience and ability.
"The chairman of the task force
— Dr. Patrick McTaggart-Cowan
— has shown no hesitation in stating that these conditions exist because of the desire of the owners to reap large profits and escape the regulations that would apply if the ships were under the Canadian flag.
"It is to be hoped that these statements by Dr. McTaggart-Cowan will receive more attention than have similar statements made by our organization over the years.
"Evidence brought out by the enquiry of government fumbling and the overlapping of departments and agencies is appalling. As we have repeatedly stated, Canada is one of the few nations in the world that fails to subsidize its own shipping. Those who express concern about the cost of such a policy should consider the more than $3 million required to conduct a partial cleanup operation after the Arrow sinking. With the construction of giant tankers the threat of pollution is being multiplied at an alarming rate.
"The suggestion for international action is a good one, but if Canada is to give leadership it must first put its own house in order."
