Fished 20 Years in B.C.
Hugo Hedmon Dead at 82
Funeral services will be held at Surrey on September 13 for UFAWU honorary member Hugo Hedman who died at Surrey Memorial Hospital this week a few hours after suffering a heart attack at his home.
A native of Sweden, where he was born in the town of Arvidsjaur in the northern province of Norr-botten in 1889, he came to this country in the twenties and was
Tuna Catch Up in B.C.
Tuna landings at southern B.C. ports in the three weeks ending August 28 totalled about 580,000 pounds, bringing the season's total to 1.5 million pounds, almost 600,000 pounds more than the level attained to the same date last year.
Another 122,000 pounds had been landed at Prince Rupert as of August 28.
Deliveries to southern ports in the week ending August 14 alone accounted for 368,000 pounds and some Vancouver plants were reported to be having difficulty coping with the quantity of fish landed.
J. S. MacMillan Fisheries has bought an estimated 60 tons of albacore in recent weeks. Other buyers include Lions Gate, Seafood Products, Vancouver Shellfish and Babcock Fisheries.
Although many of the deliveries have been made by units of the troll fleet, some larger vessels also have been landing tuna. They include the longliners Cape I la I and Linda and the draggers Miss Jean and Western Maid.
Unusually warm water temperatures are credited with bringing fair numbers of albacore into coastal waters. Much of the catch is reported to have come from waters adjacent to the Scott Islands and Cape St. James.
Landed prices to fishermen at Vancouver were quoted at 20 to 30 cents a pound in the week ending August 14, 29 to 30 cents to August 21, and 25 to 30 cents in the last week of the month. Latest quoted Prince Rupert price was 26.5 cents.
Prices at Vancouver in August last year ranged from 22Vfe cents to 26 cents.
