Fishermen's Courses Start December 6
Fishermen's upgrading courses will be offered this winter at B.C. Vocational School in Burnaby, UFAWU waterfront organizer Walter Ironside told The Fisherman this week.
Classes will be held December 6 to December 17. They will reconvene January 4 and end February 11.
Enrollment will be contingent on a candidate having at least two seasons' experience in the fishing industry. And to qualify for the federal manpower department's living allowance while taking the course, applicants must have been in the Canadian work force for three years.
The courses were arranged following talks between the manpower department, vocational school officials, the UFAWU and other industry organizations.
The manpower department will provide a total of 30 seats, IS in the gillnet fishermen's course and an equal number in the seiners' course.
Classes will merge for those portions of instruction applicable to both seiners and gillnetters.
Special classes for trawl fishermen are not planned for this winter. But trawlers may enroll in the scheduled courses, which will deal with important areas of general interest such as net mending, navigation, electronics, safety at sea and first aid.
